SATA Hard Drive Failure - need help

    Hi everyone

I was checking the voltage on the terminals (which also spurred to the primary hard drive and the SATA). I accidentally touched the two prongs which caused crackling and sparks for a split second, following this there were some strange noises coming from the primary hard disk but it soon stopped. On starting the PC and loading Windows Explorer the SATA drive was not appearing.

I have removed power from other drives in the PC and just connected the SATA drive. However, the SATA drive does not power up, there are no noises and no vibrations. I believe that I may have short circuited the hard drive.

Is there a way to change the circuit board on the hard drive or is there an easier way to recover my data as my uni work is on the disk…

    My PC specs are
    P4 2.53Ghz
    1G Corsair DDRAM
    P4S8X ASUS Motherboard
80G Maxtor connected to IDE1 as Primary Master
PX712A Plextor DVD Writer connected to IDE2 as Secondary Master
30Gb Maxtor connected to IDE2 as Secondary Slave
120G SATA drive connected to RAID controller – not working

    Any help is much appreciated

    thanks

    Rum

You could buy a new identical drive ans try swapping the circit board but that would invalidate the warrenty on the new drive and if it dodnt work you could be stuck with 2 dead drives.

Chances are with the power spike it wiped all the data too...

As the data is on the physical platters, i dont think it will have been entirely wiped. You would probably have errors on where it was reading / writing to last, but nothing serious data wise.
The main issue you have is getting access to the data on those platters, somthing which you may not be able to do im afraid
You could do as Platinum suggested and swap the boards out from another disk thats the same, but there is no assurance this will work. There is a high chance that the short killed parts inside the disk too (such as the motor to control the heads) if the power surge got that far into the drive.

If you want to hard truth, the chances of recovering the data, excluding a professional data restoration service (read : expensive), are very slim.

We purchased the hdd from Dabs and they do have some more (see link)
    http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/comp...rnalide/produc
    tView.htm?quicklinx=259Y

however the manufacture code is 6Y120L0 and on my hdd it says 6Y120M0 says so I went to the maxtor site (see link) http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Ma...1d3cef51dfe29d
    d10a191346068&epi_menuID=976d37cd478c5826433f226075b46068&epi_baseMenuID=976
    d37cd478c5826433f226075b46068&channelpath=/en_us/Support/Product%20Support/A
    TA%20Hard%20Drives/Desktop/DiamondMax%20Plus%209

Wow big link, anyway if you go to the Hard drive models (top left) you can select the manufacturers code.
this will bring up a disk drive, go to technical specifications and select model numbers from the pull down menu.
you will see here that there are three manufacturer numbers and all the data on the disk is the same

So I was wondering whether we can change the board???

I've looked around, fortunately my hdd is still relatively new and a few places sell them (see table)

    Price Delivery Total
    DABS £65.98 £3.50 £70.09
    Watford £58.69 £3.99 £63.38
    Komplet £60.00
    Simply £63.99 free £63.99
    Ebuyer £57.99 £4.49 £63.27
    Overclockers £61.10 £5.62 £67.71

So I think I'll order it once I have your guys' blessing. ^_^
I will also need to buy a another disk to copy the data (if the disk starts up that is)

    What do you guys think??
    Any other suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Rum

Doesn't look as though Maxtor are too keen on selling replacement parts / circuit boards.

Is your Drive still under warrenty? If it is, it may be an option to RMA it.

Don't think RMA'ing it will help him get his data back Parm ......

I say buy a new one, swap the boards..... and if it doesnt work return the first under warranty ( you werent even in the room remember ) and send the second back as faulty / unwanted.

    sorry for your loss

    Hello People.

Thank you all kindly for your help and advise.

The conclusion to the hard disk fiasco.

My new hard disk arrived today, the same make and model.
carfully changed the board attached the power cable and
    SATA data cable....

The computer detected the drive and I have now fully backed
up my data. All data was intact. I was fortunate that my hard disk is still relatively new and was able to find the same one......

    All is good
