Problems getting proper 5.1 in UT2K4 on A7N8X-E

I have an Asus A7N8X-E deluxe (see below) and am connnecting to my Creative DTT3500s using the s/pdif cable. Now, using the clone rear channel feature in Soundstorm, I can get my mp3s out of all speakers just fine. The problem is in UT2K4, where I can't get 5.1 despite trying every configuration of surround/no surround, EAX 2/3/none etc I can think of.

I know that the latest version of the nVidia unified driver will only play ball if the game supports DirectSound, but come on! Is there any way of getting my 5.1 back in games without resorting to £80 for an Audigy 2 ZS.

I have an old SB Live! 5.1 lying around, I'd give it a try but for the thought of all the Creative bloatware (and I think Upgrade Advisor said it was incompatible anyway, although that was a while ago).

There's a big discussion about this on nForcer's HQ, but I thought I'd ask you guys here in the hop of getting another opinion.
