AMD Radeon HD 7850 crashes on Windows start.

So, after my motherboard hijinks, my GPU is now causing problems.

    i3-2120
    8 GB Corsair Vengeance
    Asus P8H77-I motherboard
    Powercolor HD 7850

    Windows 8 RC

When I run my PC without the 7850 in, there's no problems. With the 7850 in it, it runs, but about one minute into things, the PC freezes and the screen goes black. Unplugging the HDMI cable and putting it in the internal graphics produces no signal. Returning it to the GPU goes back to a black screen.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    I have tried:
-Installing the drivers and all chipset drives.
    -Updating the BIOS
-Going into the BIOS and disabling internal graphics.

I bought it from Aria last week. I really hope they've got a decent and fast returns policy.

    Do you have a PSU?

From a previous thread this is their PSU:

    Coolermaster RS5 500W PSU

    *shudder*

I wouldn't rule out the PSU as the cause of problems either then. You need to test the 7850 in another computer with solid power or swap in a known working 7850 to decide either way.

Did you have a previous card in or is this a new build?

Re: AMD Radeon HD 7850 crashes on Windows start.

    Hello chaps.

I have installed Windows 7, which has alleviated the problem somewhat. The OS is now stable with the graphics card in, however any attempt to run the Catalyst Control Center causing the PC to hardlock.

I've done some googling and can't find anything about this.

I'm still within the 7 day "cooling off" period so am returning the card to avoid further headaches and will probably just buy a 660 Ti.

    Thanks very much.

Its more likely it is your PSU TBH - the HD7850 consumes very little power and a GTX660TI is going to cause more problems as it consumes much more power. The Elite Power PSUs are not that great at all. You only have to look at the fact it only has around 70% effiency, meaning it is an old design. You seem to be having issues with both your motherboard and now the graphics card - this is not normal at all. A poor or faulty PSU will take components out. The higher end CM PSUs are fine, but their cheaper ones are not that great at all and in many cases overrated for their stated wattage. Moreover,a GTX660TI is not that great value for money in the long run IMHO at £240 to £250 either.

Apologies, I must have made a mistake in the previous thread.

    This is my PSU:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/500w-...5mm-quiet-fan-

It is supposed to be 85% efficient and Anandtech say it is quite a good PSU.

edit: Also you can now get a 660 Ti for about £220. Selling the copy of Borderlands 2 should bring that down to £200.

That is a much better PSU!! However,do you still have another reasonable PSU to hand??

Still its rather strange that both your previous motherboard(the B75 mini-ITX one) and graphics card have had issues in such a short space. Thats two major components in a short space which have died/had issues. That is not normal at all,so you really need to check the PSU is not a dud. Do you have a multi-meter at least to check the voltages??

How much did you pay for the HD7850?? Quite a few under £160 now after this weeks price cuts.

You can get HD7950 cards for £230 to £240 and since it is not a retail copy of BL2,you will be getting less for it than a boxed copy,I suspect.

The HD7950 cards tend to be quicker once you start ramping up settings, and overclock further too. The average overclock on an HD7950 3GB on HWBOT is 1167MHZ based on over 500 submissions:

    http://webcache.googleusercontent.co...ient=firefox-a

Still,£220 is not too bad for a GTX660TI though, and that is quite a fall from the £240 to £250 only a week ago.

Re: AMD Radeon HD 7850 crashes on Windows start.

The graphics card itself isn't really faulty, I don't think. It was simply incompatible with Win8.

The only time it causes problems with Win7 Is when you try to open up CCC. I paid £170 for it delivered from Aria. Sadly going to take a hit of about £12 sending it back and what not (they don't reimburse postage).

I've heard dreadful things about AMD drivers and my main reason for return is I didn't want to "live with it" crashing when I open CCC now and then have it develop further problems later on. Also I wanted to overclock the card at some point.

For that reason I want to stay away from AMD, at least on this build.

And I'm quite sure I can get £20 for Borderlands 2 as most of the people I play with don't care about boxed copies and just want a steam code anyway. I think they'll be happy to take it off my price to save a pound or two and help me out.

Sadly I haven't got another PSU to hand, but my troubles have made me decide to just buy any card from Novatech as they're just around the corner for me and if I do have problems with it, I will hopefully be able to either return it far more easily or better yet, get them to take a look at my PC and check out what the problem is.

Just to check, you don't have any other cables plugged into your GPU do you?
