    tried Furmark 1080p test - results here so that seemed ok, that was after having re-installed the card's driver [same version].

    I'm just going to try and replicate either of the issues with a different game!

    The FurMark results are good, great temps. I would bet on the game.

    update.... so, after having a few more more lock-ups, and tellingly, one not in the game, I went through each possible cause and eventually found the culprit - broken push pin on the cpu heatsink! Replaced it with another cooler and the world according to my PC is all at one again!

    thanks for your help guys.

    now I just need some more driving talent, hehe.
