PC freezes with random solid colour screens....

Not really sure what's happening here. My PC has recently starting crashing with just a screen of a single solid colour. Colour changes every time. Not linked to any specific screen or cpu activity. All my fans, temps & voltages look fine.

Gigabyte GA-P35-S3L mobo, DualCore Intel core 2 duo, E6550 at 2.3GHz not overclocked. 8GB Corsair XMS2 6400 c5 at 400MHz. GT430 gfx card running at 1920x1080 native into an Iiyama Prolite E2208HDD. Win 7 HP fully updated.

None of my system logs show anything untoward at the time of any crashes, it just shows services being restarted when I reboot. Windows only states that it didnt shut down properly, nowt else.

    Any thoughts guys ?
    Cheers, David

GPU issue for sure. Do you have a spare ?
If not, I think I have one you can have for postage....

Re: PC freezes with random solid colour screens....

Your PSU is new IIRC,so hopefully that should not be the issue??

Is the card passively cooled or actively cooled? I know you said you checked the temperatures and fans but I will ask a few questions to clarify things:
1.)Is the inside of the case dusty??
2.)Is the card passive or active??
3.)If active is the fan running fine??
4.)What card did you have before??
    5.)Does the screen turn pink??

It looks like the card is having an issue. It might be faulty but OTH,driver issues can cause problems. I would make sure you remove all traces of the previous drivers and install the latest stable ones.

Also, there is something else too - GTX460 cards had issues with certain motherboards IIRC,and I remember reading a big thread about it somewhere.

    Yep

I think it was an older ATI
    5.)Does the screen turn pink??
Nope, its random solid colours, seemingly unconnected with what Ive been watching.

Yeah, I always remove all traces with either proprietary driver removers or Uninstall Tool and I was running the very latest nVidia drivers.

Im a bit of a stickler for keeping the case and all fans clean and the system nice n cool. Also the same for drivers and updates.

Since the 2600 has been installed it's not crashed once. I might just reinstall it soon just to see if it continues to crash.

Supposing it is faulty, I'll be after a new card - what's good and cheap right now Cat ?
    Cheers, David

Re: PC freezes with random solid colour screens....

The main thing is whether this is just a faulty card or an incompatability issue. The GT630 is essentially a rebadged GT440.

This GT630 probably would do the job:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1gb-m...ual-link-dvi-i

It will be around the same speed as your current GT440. The GT620 is a lower clocked GT630 AFAIK.

    TBH,I would get this HD6670 GDDR5:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1gb-a...ort-dvi-i-hdmi

It is the fastest card on Scan under £60 and will also be good for media usage.
