Weird problem that is driving me nuts.

    Windows 7 64 Bit

About 4 days ago my machine started doing something that I have yet to find a solution for.

It happens when I am watching a video file in media player across the network, all of a sudden I will start getting the bell sound at regular, about 1 second apart, intervals.

It seems if I shut down media player and close all windows it will do it maybe a dozen more times and then stop.

There are no messages on the screen, no strange processes that should not be running and multiple virus and spyware scans have turned up nothing.

The batteries have been changed in both my mouse and keyboard to rule those out, both have a power switch on them and turning them off does not stop it so it's not a stuck key or button.

I have never run into this before in all the years I have been on PC's and it's driving me nuts.

it does it too just tried it.

I will be watching a video full screen and it will be fine.

As soon as I move my mouse causing the controls to come back on screen it does it.

It also does it if the files are stored on the local hard drive so that rules out a network issue.

Check your error logs if you know how. I think the bell sound is usually for a detected error of some sorts, I usually start trying to deal with things like these by running a scan with AdvancedSystemcare first to see if that fixes the problem, which often it does.

That's another weird thing there does not seem to be anything in the error log that corresponds to the times it happens.

If I watch a video and get it to happen and then immediately check the logs there does not seem to be any errors at that time.

    --edit---

downloaded and installed AdvancedSystemcare ran the scan got it to repair everything it found and that did not sort it out either

This wont solve the prob but will stop you going nuts:

    Turn off system sounds.

yes but like you say that's diverting the problem not solving it.

There is obviously a fault somewhere and just turning of the notification of that fault does not really fix it

Sounds like a GPU or maybe even BIOS monitoring warning. Go into BIOS and disable audio warning for things like fan speed, check the software installed with your GPU. Sometimes software interferes with sensor monitoring so it registers 0 fan speed or temps lower than normal etc.

You could try running GPUz to log what's happening with the GPU, or hwmonitor for more general system parameters.

You could also try disabling GPU acceleration of movies (via your GPUs control panel).

nothing to do with bios. it's the windows default beep not a motherboard beep.

and it's not GPU either as that has already been ruled out.

Maybe codec issue? Try different video types etc.

Have you checked your sound settings to see what events the default beep is allocated to? If more than one then try allocating different sounds to try and narrow down which event is causing the beep

Re: Weird problem that is driving me nuts.

The Windows Ding sound which is what sound it is making is only assigned to "Default Beep" which in itself is not very helpful considering that is the sound it throws out any time there is no specific sound set for an event.

It's not a codec issue because it does not matter what the video format is it still does it.

I'm currently running a system file scan to see if that finds anything

    update

    New symptom

I left the command window open after running system file check and by accident discovered that when it it making the sound it is putting qq in the command window.

It does not even matter if the command window is the active window or not.

I can recreate this error at will by just not moving my mouse or touching my keyboard for more than 5 minutes when a video is playing.

As soon as I move the mouse I get ding and the corresponding qq at about 1 second intervals

try a different mouse or check there isnt a stuck key on keyboard

I don't have another mouse to try and as I already said earlier the keyboard has a power switch on it so I can turn it off to rule out stuck keys.

I strugle to see how it can be the mouse though because it only seems to do it while watching videos.

Re: Weird problem that is driving me nuts.

If you can disconnect the mouse or turn it off if it's a wireless mouse then try doing that anyway. It might just be that the mouse goes to sleep when not in use and then waking it up is somehow causing the errors to occur.
