Question New build random black screens

Built new rig for a friend last night using a Zalman Z11 plus case along with a Hyper 212 cooler, Asus z77 motherboard, i5, gtx660, corsair 2x4GB ram, SSD, HDD and DVD. We left the the side off during the build and no issues, and my friend also played wow for 2 hours this morning no issues. Then he put the side on and was getting random black screens which caused a restart and safe mode option on boot. Could the hyper 212 be touching the side of the case and causing an issue? I asked him to test with the side off and no issues then again with it on and it will black screen within 10 minutes. Could it be shorting somehow, or maybe overheating, although thats harder to believe as the case has 5x 120mm fans.

Re: New build random black screens

If I remember correctly the z11 has a fan in each side with a molex connector, seems to be the only difference other than air flow. Have you tried shutting the door and leaving the molex connector unplugged and running it?

Re: New build random black screens

is there enough clearance between the side and hyper 212

as the when the side is on it black screens which indicates pressure applied to cpu via the 212 touching the side......

i would check to see if there is enough space between the 2 before going any further ?????

Re: New build random black screens

Clearance is good, looks like maybe its overheating, hard to tell as my friend has the PC and I cannot test myself. Likely graphics overheating hence the black screen, not sure why though, maybe the case just needs a bigger fan at the front.

What temperatures is the graphics card getting to when you're gaming?

Re: New build random black screens

Could be too many fans, but very odd for it to overheat if everything is at stock.

You don't need that much cooling for those components so have a look at the case and design a simple airflow with one input and one output fan for starters.

Check temps with hwmonitor or similar.

Re: New build random black screens

could also be a short. Amazingly the case should act like a faraday cage, but is it possible that the side fans are building static? Does it still blackscreen when the side fans are off, but the case is shut?

Re: New build random black screens

I thought a short initially, the thing is, why would a short only happen after 10 mins? Typically a short will prevent boot up at all, or if it's intermittent it'll correspond to something physical happening like knocking the case with a leg or something. Hence your building static idea I guess, which would be a new one on me!

Re: New build random black screens

Well failing that, a problem with the PSU would be my next target. It really depends on what you are doing when it reboots. the main query is that it only does it with the side on, but if your side fans are unattached, when it's on, then that would be my next guess. Most likely is that something is flexed slightly that allows rubbing and the build up of static, but this is only a guess. Try running it with the side fans attached, but with them isolated (away from the case, not blocked or attacked to the case, and see if the same problem happens. Also try it with the side on, but with the fans not attached.
