    Graphics dead? Hp 6735s Laptop

Hi everyone, this is not so much a cry for help as a quest for opinion

This is a problem I've been trying to sort for a while and I've added issues on to the original problem haha. It's a bit of a long one, so here goes...

It started when my friend gave me a laptop (Hp Compaq 6735s) to sort out because it was having display problems. It would work ok but sometimes the screen would go dim. He thought it was going off altogether but when I looked at it in the right light I could see the desktop. After having a look around I figured it was the inverter so I replaced it, which didn't solve the problem. I then thought it must be the back light on the screen itself, so I bought a new screen and replaced that. Still didn't seem to solve it, so I fiddled around and did a fresh install of windows and then it seemed to work ok.

I gave it back to him and said "all sorted."
He gave it back a week or so later and said "Not sorted"
Lol I didn't have much luck with this one.

I hooked it up to an external monitor to see if it worked on that and when the laptop screen went dim the external monitor was still ok, so I thought I could rule out the graphics being a problem.

I then tried it out with a Knoppix live CD and it seemed to be working fine while I was using that and didn't go dim at all. I again thought maybe it was windows and started to do another fresh install.

That was when it went bad! Half way through installing windows the whole thing went dead. When I turned it on the HDD light was flashing orange and the DVD drive was going and the caps lock light flashed 4 times. Looking on the HP website it said that means a GFX issue.

So, as a last resort I stripped it down and stuck it in the oven at 200 for 10 mins. When I put it all back together it worked fine and I thought it was all sorted finally. I then went about installing windows for the millionth time and was thinking I could give it back to him after that was done and I tested it a bit. Had trouble installing all the updates and was just getting to be close to finished today when the whole thing went dead again, same as before.

So now I'm guessing that it'll need a new motherboard, but just wanted to see if anyone had any other ideas or there wasn't something I'm missing before I get one.

    Thanks for any suggestions

Re: Graphics dead? Hp 6735s Laptop

I have see loads of graphics related problems on HP laptops i have fixed a few by using a blow torch and coke can trick others i have sent for re balling but thats £100 a time another problem i have had is the cable that connects the screen to the mobo gets damaged that may be a cheaper fix at the end of the day the problem is lack of cooling at sometime generally because air in takes are obstructed

Yeah I think it probably did happen because of overheating.
In the end I got a new mb off eBay.... Which was faulty and didn't work!.... Seller is ok about me returning for a refund though.
I then stuck the old one in the oven and it worked long enough for me to install windows and give it back in a working state haha. I obviously did tell him it may fail at any time, but he was ok with that.
Just had to give up on that one

Re: Graphics dead? Hp 6735s Laptop

In theory, it might have been possible to claim against HP or the retailer but of course before opening it and trying to swap the mobo.

Googling "Hp 6735s nvidia defect" should have turned up plenty of hits from www.nvidiadefect.com and they claimed that they have had plenty of success. Personally I never went the legal route but then my personal "nvidia defects" were a 8800GT desktop card and this nForce 7150 motherboard (and an MXM card in this All-in-One I was asked to look at).

I successfully did the oven trick with both the 8800GT and the MXM but neither lasted long. It's an inherent fault due to Nvidia's incompetence & negligence and even reballing is unlikely to work well since it's the solder inside the chip package (silicon to packaging) which is at fault and that's far too delicate to fix.
