GTX690 install, now PC won't POST

So, I was helping a friend upgrade his PC,

    His old build was:

    GIGABYTE ATX LGA1366 Intel X58 + ICH10R DDR3 PCI-Ex16 PCI-Ex8 PCI S-ATA PATA USB3.0 USB2.0 IEEE1394a GbE GA-X58A-UD3R REV2
    CORSAIR DDR3 2000MHz 6GB 3x240 DIMM Unbuffered 8-9-8-24 DOMINATOR GT CMT6GX3M3A2000C8
    Intel Core i7 Extreme i7-980X 3.33GHz 12M LGA1366 Gulftown BX80613I7980X
    MSI ATI R5970-P2D2G

    PSU is a Seasonic 700W 80+

We just installed 3 sticks of RAM, a H100 CPU cooler and a GTX690.

Now the PC doesn't post at all! When we turn it on, the fans start up, but nothing happens. The screen says signal, then entering power save.

There are no Beep codes, but lights on the motherboard do light up.

I then back tracked the new hardware and put it all back to it's original state and this behavior continues.

Does anyone have any ideas of what happened and what we can try?

so you've put all the old equipment back into the case and the problem continues? triple check that you've got every cable fitted correctly and if that fails then i'd be thinking that something has been damaged when installing the new hardware. have you/your friend been using an anti-static bracelet?

Check the CPU socket for bent pins. Easy to do when changing out the HSF.

Re: GTX690 install, now PC won't POST

I didn't have to remove the CPU from the socket, just removed the stock intel cooler cleaned the CPU and put the new cooler on top.

If it was the CPU, surely there would an error code, but there isn't even any POST occurring.

So I am thinking maybe PSU trouble...

I didn't touch the MB or CPU power cables, so they should be fine.

I am very careful when installing equipment. I usually build blade servers for work, so was just helping him install a few upgrades.

Don't think so: beep codes maybe but fairly sure you can't expect POST messages without a functional CPU & RAM.

Most like thing would have been the CPU but if it wasn't moved to install the hydro...

Did you try it with only one DIMM at a time?

Re: GTX690 install, now PC won't POST

The GTX690 does consume more power than an HD5970 though:

Have you tried another PSU too??

The wattage seems enough though, but it is still worth looking at IMHO.

Re: GTX690 install, now PC won't POST

His PSU only has 1 cable for the PCIe at the moment, that splits out into 2 6 pin plugs.

1 of those plugs has a 6-8 pin adaptor and we bought a 2nd 6-8pin adapter to have 2 8 pin adaptors.

Should we get another cable to connect to the PSU to link to the 2nd power socket on the card?

    Or is this way ok?

Re: GTX690 install, now PC won't POST

Disconnect everything, both power and data except for the cpu motherboard and memory. If it still wont post, remove all the memory and use one of the older ones, could be incompatible memory or a broken slot. If its still wont post, then the motherboard might have just died, but test a new power supply just incase.

He installed a new H100 which comes with the pre applied TIM so i doubt it

Re: GTX690 install, now PC won't POST

Sounds like a short to me. Can be caused by a loose connection, e.g. when I did my new build the floppy power lead to the soundcard worked loose and it exhibited just the same characteristics as your machine. A card not properly seated could have the same effect too.

Did you reset the BIOS? After such changes you may well need to. Possible issues around RAM timings with 2 sets; the H100 isn't like a traditional fan - with my H80 I had to manually adjust the fan failsafe settings.

Otherwise you need to disconnect/take out most stuff and get down to a minimum system.
