    Failed Bios Update

    Hi everyone.

Following the completion of my build, I was doing a Bios Update to the z77e-ITX board via windows as advised on an overclocking guide when the computer froze. Unfortunately the computer will no longer boot, no visual display and no response to the USBs. No Post screens.

Can I fix the corrupted Bios?

    Regards

    Re: Failed Bios Update

Does it do anything at all? Beep, attempt to boot of a HDD, etc.? I know, hard to tell without any display. I generally buy Gigabyte and they have a 2nd recovery BIOS, but even other brands should have the sense to not erase all of the BIOS while flashing. That is, a lot the time a bootloader is not erased and that bootloader is only able to one thing: flash a new BIOS from a USB stick etc. And your manual mentions something like that:
    16. ASRock Crashless BIOS allows users to update their BIOS without fear
of failing. If power loss occurs during the BIOS update process, ASRock
Crashless BIOS will automatically finish the BIOS update procedure after
regaining power. Please note that BIOS files need to be placed in the root
directory of your USB disk. Only USB2.0 ports support this feature.
Of course you might be lucky like this guy:
    http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2200199

Last resort the BIOS may be socketed in which case Asrock may be able to flash it for you.

    Re: Failed Bios Update

A brief bit of googling suggests that this motherboard has a replaceable BIOS chip. There's some on ebay for less than a tenner.

Lesson learned: never ever flash a BIOS from within Windows unless there is no alternative. Always choose the CD, floppy or USB stick with DOS/FreeDOS boot.

If it's a new build, is the motherboard still under warranty? It might be a bit dishonest, but you could try returning it. If you return is to the retailer, I doubt they could prove it was due to a BIOS flash failure...my guess is they'd just swap it out. Just a suggestion...I'm probably just a bit more 'morally challenged' than most though!

    Re: Failed Bios Update

Redownload your BIOS from the Internet and try and create a bootable DOS recovery stick. HERE

You may need to boot from a floppy drive though if your board doesn't support USB booting.

The board is bricked so you may need an automatic tool to flash it. You will need to edit the files that has been written to your USB/Floppy to point at your BIOS file.

My board ECS board, I bricked that and had to use this method. Unfortunately I didn't have a floppy drive at the time

Your best bet is to return it under warranty or swap the BIOS chip by buying it off eBay or sorts.

    Re: Failed Bios Update

I've decided to replace the bios chip with one from eBay. I would return it but everything is connected and its not worth the time to disconnect, repackage and ship. If the new bios chip doesn't work I'll return it under warranty.

What a pain though, I'm never gonna finish this build lol.

    Re: Failed Bios Update

When you get the new chip and it does work you could hot flash your old chip.

Recently on eBay I saw a 6 digit motherboard diagnoser which claims to detect a corrupt bios. It can't fix it but I was curious as to if it does actually work.

New bios chip received and the system is now up and running. Now for overclocking
