    A drive troubles.

    Just put a new PC together and everything works perfectly now, except for the A drive. Now this wouldn't be a major apart from the fact I need to use it to install a hardware driver for my new shiny SATA barracuda drive. Since windows xp doesn't support them without service pack 1 (obviously haven't got this as format / install Xp stage).

    Here's what i've tested so far.

    I have 2 ribbons my original and the new supplied with my new ASUS A8V M/b

    I have 2 A drive, my original and the new one.

    I have tried the following combinations:

    original cable / new drive
    new cable / new drive
    new cable / old drive

    The two cables are slightly different the original has the dimples on the one side of the connection point so i know which way round to insert it. However the new cable has one of the pin holes filled in (where there's a pin missing on the back of the floppy drive) so that's pretty self explanatory as well. Just to double check the end of the cable with the twsited wires goes into the back of the drive, right ?

    The drive power indicator is constantly on, from the moment the PC is switched on, this is true of all the setups I've tried. The drive just wont find a disk - it doesn't even appear to try (no typical A drive noises can be heard).

    Any ideas guys?

    I have a cable sat on my shelf, plugged into a drive, where the twisted end will go into the mobo.

    IIRC you're doing it the "right" way, but my way works too!

    Basically though, it sounds like you've got it the wrong way. If it's a three-way cable make sure you're using the two ends, not the middle connector, and try the cables the other way up and around.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    So far as I knew, it doesn't matter which way round you plug the ends in i.e. either end can go into the motherboard or floppy drive. The fact that the floppy light is constantly on makes it sound like you've got the wrong way up, as the others said. You just need to turn it over.

    thanks for your replies everyone, i had indeed plugged it the wrong way around, the ASUS cable doesn't make it very obvious which way it should go!
