first time build CPU 1 P4 & CPU 2 P8 problem

Hi ive just put my new rig together, it was my first time and so far this is the only problem i have run into

I have a gigabyte 970a ud3 motheroard and amd fx6300 and a 530w be quiet l7 psu

my pc seems to be working okay now but im not sure if im doing the right thing, I put everything together last night and got a bit confused when i fond the 12v power plug near the cpu is 8 pin, coming out of my psu is 2 4 pin plugs for this 1 labeld CPU 1 P4 & the other labeld CPU 2 P8, after doing a bit of reading around i decied i should put both of these plugs in, they do both fit but it is very very tight,

once everything was wired up i went to turn the pc on the first time and got nothing, i tried a few more times still nothing, so first i checked all my wiring to the power switch etc... that was all fine, then i imeditley went to the CPU plugs as these were the only thing that had caused me confusion first i remoed the top plug witch was at the time CPU 2 P8 witch is in pins 3,4,7,8 still nothing so i took the bottom one out and placed it in the top plug.... then i had power fans everything, and the pc posted just fine..... i havent touched it since then.... can anybody tell me why this is ? am i supposed to have both plugs in, from what i read last night it says i am ?

would really appriciate any advice on this.

Also can i just confirm my pc is POSTing sucesfully,
when i turn it on i get the gigabyte screen, then a page that flashes so quickly that I cant read anything then a page telling me its trying to boot from cd rom but fails as there is nothing in there.

is this correct ?

Older mobos only had a 4pin plug, and I think this was because older CPU had ratings lower than 75watt.

Now that cpus are getting more powerful, modern mobos have 8 pin plugs.

Check your mobo manual as it might show you what way to plug in the power. Best to have them both plugged in.

Can you not plug them both in, adding the unplugged plug into the empty socket.

I think that the 2 parts of the plugs can only plugged in one way anyway. My PSU plugs have 2 little clips that clip together to make 1 plug.

Firstly I think you should probably have both plugged in if you have a 8-socket on the motherboard. They usually snap together and then slot in together, should be quite a good fit so don't worry about the tightness.

Not sure if you are asking if the cd rom boot fail is ok, so either you have a blank hard disk in there or the boot order is messed up. You will need a windows CD/DVD or usb to boot from. You can select another boot device usually from the splash screen with the right F(unction) key.

Thanks for the replys, they did both fit in together just with quite a bit of force the plastic on the plugs wasnt moulded particularly well and i was a bit nervous about putting any force on it,
everything is running great now
