installed new mobo, windows 8 hissy fit

    now then.

just installed a new mobo (biostar ta990fxe). windows 8 won't boot. it says:

    recovery

your pc needs to be repaired, blah blah blah

    file:\Windows\system32\config\system
    Error code: 0xc0000225

it won't repair off the installation dvd. have i missed something obvious, or buggered something up?

win8 is installed on a samsung 840 ssd, and has been working fine for the last few months until today, when i popped in the new mobo.

Was this a retail licence or OEM ? OEM licences are tied to the mobo. It won't be happy with a replacement. I assume it POSTs OK ?

    retail.

yep, posts ok. been googling it and it appears it may be tied to the windows not liking the bios...the bios on the new board is uefi, and it wasn't on the old board. trying various recommended fixes to no avail...

Sorry about that. I've not heard of that issue before. Surely W8 can handle UEFI ?

    one would assume so!

lots of fixes upon googling relate to xp and win7, but there are some for the same issue on win8.

Re: installed new mobo, windows 8 hissy fit

well, it looks like the ssd could be buggered...

i've managed to pull some files off it and save them onto my hdd (i did a clean win8 install onto the hdd). problem is, i can't format the ssd...or even access it in file explorer to delete everything on it. when i try either method, the system hangs and freezes and i have to hit reset.

i can't use any disk repair software on it, as it doesn't show up as a useable drive (one of the formatting attempts seems to have done a half job on it...but i can't format it properly).

i tried using the samsung data migration software to see if it would circumvent this, but it failed at trying to format it.

any suggestions as to how i can wipe it? i suspect it could be heading for a return if not.

Can the bios see it ?
If so, download disk part iso and boot from that. It has all the tools.

Re: installed new mobo, windows 8 hissy fit

aye, the bios can see it. i'll give that a shot.

i contacted amazon (who i bought it off), described the problem, and they're going to send me a new one. not in stock at the mo though, estimated delivery between mid-may and mid-june. gives me plenty of time to try and wipe it before sending it back.

the biggest problem, however, has just been realised. i was hoping to avoid re-downloading all 20gb of bf3, as last time it took ~18hrs. tried a smart-arse work around (it was among the folders i got off the ssd before it stopped even trying), which resulted in losing the bf3 files, damnit. so that's now my main problem...if i do manage to get the bf3 folder back off the ssd (i'm pretty sure i copy/pasted instead of cut, so it should still be there)...is there a way of making origin recognise it's installed, without downloading it again?

and, also...anyone who's not got an ssd, GET ONE NOW. going back to a hdd is like downgrading from a ferrari to a tractor. it's awful.

Re: installed new mobo, windows 8 hissy fit

I did something similar. I copy pasted the bf3 folder back to where it should be then told origin to download it again. It started the download, realised the files where already there, and announced it was finished. I then verified the install and off I went.

Same for steam see my thread here.

Re: installed new mobo, windows 8 hissy fit

that's what i tried...although it started the copy, and i realised it would take ages, so i decided to cancel it, undo copy, and use cut and paste instead because it would be quicker. however, the original somehow got replaced with the 50mb or so that i let it download (i started the download before i moved the folder, oops). here's to hoping i can revive the ssd long enough to get the folder again. i'll need my defibrillator.

yep...but only what i determine to be important/pain in the arse to re-install if lost...how on earth bf3 slipped through the net is beyond me.

i did regular system images on the ssd too, none of which showed up when it went haywire.

Just out of interest, was this just a replacement Mobo? I mean, was the old MoBo the same?

When changing a component that big, I'd always reinstall from scratch rather than risking some low level hardware change is going to bugger things up (eg. When I switched to AHCI).

hey doubt you're still having this issue and have moved on from such worries but i didn't see a resolution to this problem so ill post one. I ran into this issue when my cat knocked over a water bottle on my z77 sabertooth mobo frying the unit. unfortunately i had no warranty and little obama change so i had to downgrade to the asus maximus gene v.

Issue: After upgrading/swapping motherboards on a windows 8 based computer. Windows fails to boot.

Why?: Windows UEFI (Secure Boot) is picky and it doesn't like drastic changes.

Solution: Look in bios (Usually hold F1 when first turning on computer) Go to boot settings and look for a box or line marked CSM (Compatibility Support Management) and disable it. If ya can't find you might have to go into advanced settings. Once disabled you should boot like normal. gl and keep cats away from the interwebz.

If your still having troubles drop me an email skeltek@gmail
