    System crashing when left idle

Just wondering if anybody's seen a similar problem - my PC crashes/goes dead when it's left idle.
    My build:
    i7-3770k
    Sabertooth Z77
    Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1600MHZ 9-9-9-24
    Crucial M4 128GB
    OCZ ZS 600W
    MSI 7950 TF3
    Cooler Master Elite 431 Plus

When I leave it idle, and come back to it, there is no power to the USB ports, no video out, but the power LED is on (not flashing, just on) and fans running. When I press the power button, the system powers off instantly, and the fans stop spinning. Turning it back on, and everything's fine, although I get a "Windows encountered a problem that forced it to restart" message from Windows 8.

I've disabled sleep (set it to never) in power options. I do have Rapid Start enabled, but surely if the system's not going to be sleeping this wouldn't matter.
I've done a re-install and this still happens, as well as resetting the BIOS to default beforehand (no O/C).
Going to use USB BIOS Flashback to flash 1908 (which I'm already on), leave it at stock settings and re-install 8.

Is there any way I can get any info from the Windows 8 crash/dump thing?
    Thanks.

Re: System crashing when left idle

Common-ish problem. Idle can still put the processor, gpu, motherboard, hard drives etc. in low power states which can be unstable due to drivers, firmware/bios version or power supply characteristics.

The windows diagnostic may help - should work for win 8 as well:

Re: System crashing when left idle

    Thank You!
In the errors, it talks about Realtek High-Definition Audio, lots of USB Devices, and:
"Platform Power Management CapabilitiesCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) Disabled
PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) has been disabled due to a known incompatibility with the hardware in this computer."

which sounds like the graphics card??? or the actual pci-e slots of my motherboard???

I'm going to re-install anyway, but any suggestions? Would installing MSI Afterburner as well as just the AMD Radeon HD 7xxx PCI-E Drivers help?

Re: System crashing when left idle

(typed before you posted the report) IF I remember rightly, PCI-E ASPM is deliberately disabled to improve stability - the card will still be saving power when in 2d and idle fine. Most computers will have the same thing.

Check audio and USB drivers, there should be some properties in device manager that you can set to disable power saving - uncheck the 'allow computer to turn off this device to save power' perhaps on the USB Root Hubs.

There's a lot of things it could be, so you just have to keep trying to nail it down - you can force the graphics card not to power down in idle, ditto the CPU. In fact it might be worth seeing if there's a windows power plan (or you can edit one) that completely disables power saving and seeing if that helps.

You updated your Realtek High-Definition Audio drivers?

On the previous install I had - I downloaded R2.71 off the realtek website because the driver version was later than the one off asus's website.

Re: System crashing when left idle

Done a re-install, and installed all stock drivers (from ASUS + the Graphics Card). Left it downloading Windows Updates and came back about 40 minutes later and it had crashed.
Went in to Power Options --> Change Plan Settings --> Change advanced power settings, and turned anything that looked eco-friendly/power-saving off. Also went in to device manager and found two xHCI USB root hubs that the computer was turning off to save power, but disabled that option.

I had problems with audio drivers a few year back that were causing similar problems, i remember having to re-install them a few times for it to sort it.

Re: System crashing when left idle

I know that on one of my machines there is an option in the BIOS for legacy USB, which basically stops the USB power from being disabled on the mouse / keyboard

Re: System crashing when left idle

I found that W8 rapidstart caused no end of troubles for me. Disabling that solved most of my problems.
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

do you overclock, and if so, check to see if the speedstep setting is turned on in bios, can cause havoc with more extreme o/cs
