    CD-RW Trouble

If anything can go wrong it will.

If anything can go wrong it will, and at the worst possible time.

Too true, when this weekend I needed to burn a presentation to CD and my CD-RW wouldn't play fair.

I have a feeling I may just have a bad drive, but before I condemn it to the technological graveyard I figured I'd run it past you gentlemen to see if you have any ideas.

The problem is simple. The drive receives power, will open, but when ever I put a CD in (of any kind) it simply wont run the CD or acknowledge its existence. It doesn't seem to begin to spin the CD.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drive. Even changing my drives round between master and slave etc.

The annoying thing is that the RW is my newer drive, old faithful keeps running smoothly!

    Any ideas?

Different IDE cable? Put it on to Primary if its currently on Secondary or vice versa?

Tried switching the IDE. I haven't checked the BIOS.

Sure it just doesn't like the media?

My CDRW does this more and more often now... Doesn't recognise discs. I think it's on it's way out. Thank god I have a DVD burner.

"Doesn't like the media" as opposed to what other problem?

The drive is acknowledged, but not any CD's. It wont autorun and if the drive is clicked on to either explore or open etc. then it asks for a disc to be inserted.

I hate the fact that I have an old, standard CD-ROM drive, it's got to be about 3 or so years old, and it's my new, not even 1 year old RW that's playing up.

    Grrrr.

I've just had to dump to two CD-RW drives from repairs,i even upgraded their firmware to no avail, neither would acknowledge cd's of any kind, pity from the outside they looked brand new.You might have to face the fact the drive my by borked beyond repair.Still,is there any warranty left?

Well, my money is spend on a DVD/CD RW combo, external. And a little extra for a 5 year warranty. Hopefully if it screws up it will be at a time when that model doesn't exist and they have to upgrade me!

I'll still give that lens cleaning a shot though. Excuse my ignorance but I'm assuming that involved me opening the thing up? What would be the best way to clean it?
