    Unique Disk ID

    Hi guys...

I used the 'clean all' command in diskpart to clean a disk of all data / partitions etc. However, by doing this it also overwrites the disk signature (unique disk id) to 00000000. I usually write the original ID down so I can set it back again. This time I forgot to do so. Is there any way I can find out what is was or is it too late now? If I make up a new ID, it won't cause any issues will it (providing it doesn't clash with any existing disk ID in the system)?

    Re: Unique Disk ID

You should be OK generating another UID for the disk (so long as it is unique on your system)

You might find the old UID buried on the Windows registry key.

    Some info here:

    Re: Unique Disk ID

Thanks Peter. Unfortunately its a case where I'm reinstalling the system from scratch and therefore have erased my SSD (which was running windows) along with this HDD with old system images. I've just made up an ID which should hopefully be ok.

If the drive ever had to be RMA'd, there wouldn't be an issue would there? I hope not...

    Re: Unique Disk ID

No. the UID is generated when the master boot record is created. It isn't persistent or globally unique to that disk. (It is only 4 bytes long)
