Gaming Rig HEATING up, help please before it blows!

    Hello all,

My gaming machine is getting too hot, can feel the case heating up, hot air i need some cooling advice to sort this out please...

Built in the coolermaster silencio 550, so i dont want anything noisy if i need to add anything, thanks.

On normal use, playing videos etc.. the heat is not too bad but on Battlefield 3 ultra settings gameplay after half hour the heat is building up, but no lag or crashing the system.

<<<My full system specs can be seen on the left side<<<<

Advice help please, many thanks to all

Re: Gaming Rig HEATING up, help please before it blows!

What is your current cooling setup (case fans and CPU fan), what kind of temps are you getting (on CoreTemp or Asus' own software/BIOS) and which part of the case gets warm?

I've had a look at your case and the simple answer is to slap a couple fans in there if there aren't any already. I like Silverstone Air Penetrators (AP122 or AP123); they are pretty quiet and shift air well. But the quietest fans I ever owned were Enermax Magmas (I think they got replaced by the T.B. or Twister Bearing fans), these are quite weak fans but the were dead silent. On the high end side of course, there are the Noctua NF-F12s. High flow, quiet and with rubber mountings to keep noise down, these are the blow-the-budget fans for those who want silence.

Until you know what temperatures your system is experiencing internally, it will be hard to advise.

You should expect hot air - that's perfectly normal.

Try downloading http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html and see what sort of temperatures you're getting.

As above, which cpu cooler are you using? A few months back I changed my case fans to enermax's TB silence batwings, which 1, dropped the temps down 5 deg+ and 2, (strangely) gave me more even temps across the cores. But with our UK weather temps rising, my room is now at 27 deg which reflects in my temps which have rose 4 deg's plus. Also try running without the case filter and see if the temps drop.

Those temps are fine for a GPU. Battlefield 3 has consistently high GPU usage so those temps are prob the worst you will get.

CPU wise I can't comment but when you get some more numbers back then we can see. If its all stable and you aren't overclocking the nuts off that CPU then I'm sure it will be fine.

Re: Gaming Rig HEATING up, help please before it blows!

65-70 on a GPU sounds quite reasonable and the Hyper 212 is plenty for the 3570k since you are running at stock clock (though would be good to know your CPU temp as well). Since your case has an extra space for a 120 at the front, my advise would be to stick a Silverstone Air Penetrator there to blow near your GPU. That will hopefully help its cooling and shift the case's balance to positive pressure which will help keep dust out (and hopefully you have dust filters on the front).

Re: Gaming Rig HEATING up, help please before it blows!

If the GPU is only hitting 65-70 at peak then you're fine.

I think my 4870s used to shut themselves down at 115 degrees celsius

I'm not saying that's a good temperature for all cards to run at, but you're a long way from something bad!

Check out the CPU cores as well, see how they're doing.

Re: Gaming Rig HEATING up, help please before it blows!

Depends. GPU fans should scale with temperature, but you can usually tweak their behaviour with software like MSI Afterburner.

The CPU fan should also scale with temperature, if it's been plugged into the correct port. It's much easier if it's a 4-pin PWM fan, but I think most motherboards can use voltage tweaks to make 3-pin fans speed up and slow down on the CPU port. There are usually settings for that on the motherboard's BIOS. There are software options like SpeedFan, but I tend to find the motherboard solutions much simpler to use.

As for case fans, that's more complex. If you plug them into your motherboard's headers, your motherboard might support some fan speed settings. Alternatively, you can plug them all into a fan controller that goes in a 5.25" bay, and adjust them manually. Or, alternatively, you can plug them into fan speed adapters, and then plug those into molexes. They come in two main guises, either the simple voltage changes like this: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/shark...ucing-fan-rpm) or the adjustable, which is similar but comes with a variable resistor that you can operate by twisting the knob.

Usually in the BIOS, and I'm not sure if your board supports it, but you could try downloading Asus' Fan Xpert 2 software. Alternatively, you could buy a fan controller. There are a ton out there.

well my fans are running below 600rpm, have plugged the back exhaust fan into chfan1 port on board the intake is directly plugged into power supply

they running like below 600rpm or max about 700rpm

Really does depending on the fans tbh, my fastest fan is the cpu which ticks along at 600rpm, rest run at 300-400rpm.

Also without the actual gaming temps the fan speed is pretty pointless..

I'm liking that fan xpert tool... I typically ignore motherboard manufacturers software utilities but that looks kinda useful. Will have to see if there is a version that can be used on my Asus mobo.

run something like realtemp & msi afterburner and have a gaming session for a couple hours. then tell us what all the max temps are afterwards. as others have said - 65-70c is perfectly fine for a graphics card personally i only start to get concerned when they start creeping up to 90c (though i generally keep them much cooler than that. my current card has never gone above 65c. but it has a great cooler on it!). but still, that is apparently ok with most cards. though i'm not comfortable with that..
