Yes that fan on it is very important It's acting as a passive cooler if there isn't a fan on it and the effectivness of it is greatly reduced. Essentially the dead fan is blocking airflow to the heatsink too so that's making it worse.Try giving the fan a little push to see if you can get it started again (not while it's spinning of course )

Normally I would always go with zalman for heatsinks but the thermalright is also a good performer Its mainly up to you and whether price is an issue or not?

Oh and can a computer be shut down like mine is by the southbridge being hot? My southbridge gets pretty darn warm.
As Shogun says the having a fan working is the main thing, the Northbridge is one of the main working parts of the motherboard. As for the Southbridge stick a passive heatsink on it if you want, but truthfully it should be fine as it is.

well geez... thats very odd. The fan has been spinning ever since it stopped, I tapped it and restarted my computer and its working now. But I think that was just a coincidence. Because when its spinning it still shuts off the comp when i'm doing regular things. Any thoughts?

catattack, only just seen this thread...

i have exactly the same problem as you, although my comp restarts itself instead of fully turning off.

ive replaced RAM, tried diff RAM slots/comb, new gfx cooler, new heatsink, resat the cpu many times, case side off + fan blowing in, new power supply. the problem still remains. I put mine down to crappy motherboard. but i cant b sure.

ill be keeping an eye on this thread!

Thanks guys... Even though it didnt solve the problem, it helped get closer to it.

Tbh I would never take a pc to a computer store since the knowledge base on here is much larger, something we won't be able to fully diagnose they won't Is money an issue for you? You could try replacing your mobo as this might fix it.

I had a similar problem. My NF7-S wasnt stable over 133FSB, programs would randomly crash and I couldnt get more than 2days uptime.

It was the motherbard :-( I went out and bought an AN7 form PC world of all places and now the same guts are running at 10.5*230FSB 11-2-2-2.5

Having said that I think my mobo came from a dodgy source (Scam computers) BUT that would be my first change.
