mousepad for optical
does a decent one make much difference? Currently have an intellimouse v3 and thinking about getting an mx1000. I am currently using a fabric mouse mat I got at uni years ago and it's always been fine but seen some things on the forums suggesting a glass mat is better.
Is this true and if so, any suggestions on which one?

yup it does make a big big difference if your into gaming or designing.
icemat 2nd edition is the glass one and is great stuff :)
fUnc 1030 is meant to be quite good aswell.
i'd say icemat it your not on a tight buget (£25ish) and the other if you are, its a bit cheaper :P

I use an icemat with the MS rev 3 - its a great combo.
Very smooth movment, and the "mats" are so easy to clean. Rev 1 or 2 of the mat really dont make much difference, its just marketing.

I have a Ratpadz GS and am very happy with it :)

I also have a ratpad gs and it's only just noticably worn down a bit, considering i use it about 12 hours a day it's lasted for about a year and a bit

I have an Icemat and it's fantastic with my Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0. Really smooth and precise

I had a lot of problems with optical mice when they first came out and it took me a long time to realise it was due to the cheap mouse mat and not the mouse itself, since switching to the everglide attack pad its been smooth sailing.
If you're having problems, upgrade to a decent mouse pad - it'll be worth every penny.

btw, i couldnt stand the MX1000.
MX510 is nice though, just a bit heavy for me (without removing the weight), and the buttons are much hader to press than the MS ones.

i peronally have the Microsoft Leather wireless mouse (bling!) and an everglade mouse mat (which i won at a LAN party!) - the huge see through once.
the mouse feels great on this surface and tracks with no problems at all :D
