Network Weirdness

Right, this is starting to drive me insane, I have noticed it a few times now and I have no idea whats going on really.

If I look at Network in Windows 8, I see my own PC, the router but occasionally I will get a phone show up and a Nexus tablet. However when I check attached devices in the router it only shows my PC.

Only thing I can think of is its devices next door or wherever attempting to connect to the strongest signal or whatever? Anyone else have any better ideas?

Windows network discovery should only pick up devices on the local network however the devices in the screenshot above does not show the IP address assigned. Is your PC connected via wireless or cable?

Have you run a packet sniffing software like wireshark and filter by MAC address to see if it is connected to your network?

My whole house is wireless, and no I haven't yet, will get on that.

Fing is really handy, available on android devices

No nothing using the powerline.

wireshark hits you with everything, its not easy to work

I have used Nirsoft Wireless Network Watcher, and that Nexus 7 is showing up again in Computers but not showing as connected to the network, to be honest I am at a complete loss.

have you got a plex box running? or anything else using uPNP?

could it be devices trying to get onto the bt openreach side of your bt wifi connection?

Don't have a plex box, the router is using uPNP.

And yes could be right, its no other devices just those two, they keep coming and going.

Try looking at the wifi settings on your PC, perhaps they are trying to create an ad-hoc network directly with your PC rather than via the router?
MAC address but no IP address seems like they are not on your network, perhaps they start trying to negotiate and then get told to go away.

Edit to add: I would probably be changing WiFi passwords regardless.

Many thanks, yes that is what seems to be happening, that they are trying to connect but are being refused, at a guess I would say someone around here hasn't set up their phone or tablet for any particular network and its trying to connect to the first one it comes across. There are a lot of families around here with younger kids etc.

I have changed my password again but at a guess I think they would find it hard to even guess it, its WPA2-PSK 25 digit alpha numeric, even I struggle to remember it lol
