    help - new HDD problems

having a few problems with a new hard drive, its a 200gig drive but whatever i do i can't get it recognised above 131 gig??

its set up as a slave drive in a machine, the primary (20gig) drive has XP on it

disk manager won't recognise anything above 131gig, i've unplugged the primary drive & tried to format via windows XP installer & that won't recognise anything above 131 gig either

the drive is definitely a 200gig, it says so on the drive, i've checked a few times (just in case!!) its definitely a maxtor diamondmax 200gig drive

what am i doing wrong here????

any help appreciated, its a mates machine & he'll be wanting it back soon, i don't want to be telling him his spanky new 200gig hard drive is actually half the size he was expecting

/edit - BIOS recognises the full size, its just windows that doesn't.

you need to have at least Sp1 installed for windows to be able to recognise large drives

Remove the new HDD, install SP1, then add the drive again.

your system specs are really required here mate. motherboard,PSU,CPU etc.

use partition magic if you have it, make a rescue boot disk. I get the feeling for some reason it aint partitioned right.

this is an irritatingly frequently asked question.

your BIOS and OS need to support 48 bit logical block addressing, to allow hard disks larger than 130ish gb

supported operating systems are linux 2.4.20, windows xp sp1 +, windows server 2003, and windows 2000 sp3 +.

supported bioses, dunno. read your bios release notes.

extra fiddling needed if you install an unsupported os then update it, e.g. a registry key in windows xp -> sp1/2 (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Atapi\Parameters\EnableBigLba = 1)

a slipstreamed xp sp2 cd would make this a lot less painful, assuming a compatible BIOS
