New PC overheating - HELP ASAP please!

I built this computer for this chap, I tested the pc and everything worked fine.
Here is the spec (everything is run at stock speed)

    NF7 – S mobo
    512 crucial DDR 400 ram
    Coolermaster centurion
Tagan 380W Low noise Power Supply
    AMD AthlonXP 3000
    Thermaltake Volcano 12 heatsink
    One case fan
    RAD 9800

After he had it for a few hours again no overclock he said the temps are,…. Idle @ 45° then after 15min 55° - then gaming sends it overboard! And turns it off. I think 65° was the bios limit and that is with the fan full on hair dryer style.

I reseated the heatsink and attempted to boot the lights come on, all the fans spin, the hard drive fires up but no “beep” from the bios and no post! I cleared the cosmos and checked all leads and cables, I have had to leave it for now but I really need some advice! The monitor light also failed to boot, so possible a dead gcard? But I guess it would not come up if the pc is not booting (the fan works on the gcard if that mean anything)

What component failing would cause the system not to post? Would the cpu do this? And could the cpu have been faulty hence the overheat?

Please can you help this guy has already paid me for the computer and I feel real bad and very stressed !!!

    EDIT NEW OPENING POST!

    Lightbulb paste?

I know this may seem like the obvious, but have you applied any thermal paste between the chip and the heatsink? I have the volcano 12 incidently, and when it was turned on full, it really was a cooling monster! I had to turn it down 'cause it was way too loud and i didn't need my CPU THAT cool!

    :O)

That sounds like a problem with seating the heatsink, just putting it on properly should do the trick, along with a layer of thermal paste. Something's definately not right since I'm sitting here with an overclocked CPU, a Volcano 12 and 40C!

its most likly the case! If it only has one 80mm blow hole then it needs more! I got rid of my wave master for the same reason! My PC would overheat too!

Wouldn't be the case, as that wouldn't make the CPU temp shoot up over 20ºC just by putting load on the CPU. As blueprint and mike_w said, it's very possible the HSF isn't seated correctly.

And it IS a very good heatsink, mine cools my XP-M2500+ clocked at 2.5GHz below 50ºC with the fan on low. Putting the fan on high normally drop the temp a further 5-10ºC depending on clock speed.

If I set my fans to low on my case my CPU will overheat and shut down!

Your system is massively overclocked, Bobby's friend's isn't. I would expect yours to overheat to the point of system failure, but not his. For a non overclocked system, 1 fan pulling air in and the PSU pushing air out should suffice.

    GUYS I have major probs!!

    I’m well peed off!!!

Ok I reseated the heatsink with my brother last night (it looked fine when we took it off) a simple job as you know, applied a thin layer of good paste and carefully reseated the heatsink… went to boot up and nothing!

The lights come on, all the fans spin, the hard drive fires up but no “beep” from the bios and no post!

Please can you help this guy has already paid me for the computer and I feel real bad!

Generally, a no graphics problem will generate beep codes. By all means, try the card in another chassis, but I think from the sound of it, that you could have a dead CPU. Same for memory. If the graphics card posts in another machine, it's definitely not that. I'd say either CPU or motherboard, and you'll only know which if you can try the components with another board and CPU respectively.

I had the same problem ages ago, it turned out to be heatsink wasn't seated properly, even after me re-seating it twice. I made the grave mistake of not checking which way round the heatsink went, and although it was sitting on the socket securely, it wasn't making any contact with the CPU. The solution was this:

I've nicked his loverly ASCII pic above. Is the heatsink definately making contact with the CPU core?

Ahh, another thing, once you've removed the heatsink to try and re-seat it, check the CPU. Take it out and check the pins underneath to see if it's scorched anywhere. Also, check the corners of the chip to see if it's physically broken and check the core carefully, you may have crushed it when fitting the CPU.

It's fiddly stuff mate, take care and don't ruch things. Also, don't use excessive force to connect heatsinks.

most people i have spoken to seem to think it's the CPU that has packed up, so how do you go about RMA'ing it, the company was aria.co.uk, i mean do you they try and shift the blame? do i need to clean it up with the paste all over the show?

Check the HSF is definately on properly before sending it back mate!

Aria are normally very good with returns. Go here and fill out an RMA form to get your number.

will it not post then if the heatsink is not on tight?

the thing is i had it on test for 24 hours with idle temps of around 40 with the fan on low, so something has gone wrong after that
