I am assuming all parts are new ?
Take everything out of the case to rule out shorting .
    Memtest RAM
Change DDR3 speed to default in BIOS

Re: pc powering down a new buid

thanks oilsheikh , all parts are new, i ran mem test and it passed, i also took out the gt610 and tryed useing the on board gfx, that worked till i try to install the chipset and onboard gfx drivers. then windows would not boot but i did find in the windows restore that its saying bad driver, the drivers iv used came form the mainbord cd/windows update and get the latest drivers from the gigabyte webate so im buting this down to a bad mainbaord.

since it all new im going to rma the mainabord back and get a new one

Sorry to hear that bud. I am out of ideas.
It is really annoying when you get all your parts together for a build and then things don't work and you have to spend hurs trying to find out who's the culprit!

I got a new mainboard today, still having the same problem, and I can't even see how this could be a bad CPU

Re: pc powering down a new buid

I'd try and find the faulty part by trying all the components one by one in another pc.

Re: pc powering down a new buid

I would have said to check the northbridge temperature with a finger [loading Windows runs the drives pretty hard], but now you have a new board and still the same shutdown problem. While installing Windows? A sudden power down? Could be something dragging down a voltage and tripping the monitor. Lessee.... pull the 610, pull the ODD, & try loading Windows from UFD. If that fails, swap HDDs and try again. Fails, borrow a CPU. And RAM... don't forget to swap that even if it did pass Memtest+. It's all you can do. A friendly tech at your puter store can load-test the PSU for you, takes but a minute.

Sounds like a memory issue. Even if it passes Memtest that doesn't mean 100% working memory. Try another stick ideally as it is an easy test (most techie friends would have at least 2 x 4gb ddr3 so might lend you a stick for the day). Alternatively let memtest run 5 passes (still would not reassure me as much as a different module though).

You mentioned linux in the OP, can you run a live linux cd/dvd? Can you install linux on the system?

Other areas to check are the SATA cables - damage to those (which can be hard to spot) could cause the symptoms you describe.

I had this same problem before of the PC powering down on Windows install. It was on a new build using XP and 4GB of RAM in 2X2GB sticks. Bios was fine and so was a memory test but as the windows install started it would get to different loading stages then the PC would turn off. Removing one stick let the windows install, but then added the stick back the machine would freeze.

I understand that as you only have one stick this test is not possible.

True, the OP only mentioned one stick but even so there should be at least two slots to try that stick. And even though it passes memtest - and since the system is stable in the BIOS - it might be possible to go into the BIOS and see if there is any option to downclock the memory. RAM which is only *marginally* bad might be ok if it is set to run at a lower setting.

Although borrowing a know good DDR3 stick from somewhere would a better (& faster) idea. Also, the laptop drive is used? Or even if it's new, does it pass SMART or the manufacturer's diagnostic tool?
