    Something is very very wrong.

All of a sudden, Youtube and Amazon no longer work. I thought it;s Flash player, uninstalled and still same issue.

Case closed. Speedbit Video accelerator was causing the problem.
Somehow it had become faulty. Even disabling all the add-ons in IE and restarting didn't help.

Have resinstalled Video accelerator and all is good.

Intriguing, what is this thing of which you speak? Does it do what it says on the tin? Would it be of any assistance to someone on a crappy laggy net connection?

Yes, it should. The Free version of Speedbit video accelerator increases the speed of playback of Standard non-HD Youtube videos. Youtube buffers a few mins. and then buffer the rest when your watched mins. are up. Speedbit keeps buffering future mins. even before you reach the end of your first buffer.
