Tried cleaning the lens?
no not yet it's still stuck in my shuttle i shall dig it out later! i hope it is that
lens clean has done nout, anyone else? as i have a shuttle i don't have another cd drive, this is a prob so i will have to buy another allinone dvd combo!! bugger!
Sounds like the len's has gone mate.
Can you test it in another PC ?
for the first time ever i don't have another pc to test on!! man this must be a first! i will see what i can dig out, does anyone think this could be software?
I've had two people report drives not reading blanks etc now, in one case after connecting a hard disk in the optical drives place, then swapping back again. Very strange. I certainly would reserve judgement for a format if it isn't solved before then.
thats what i did! swaped a hard drive the day before into where the dvd was and then swaped back!!! uh o i need to test in another machine! ASAP!Quote:

Usually this can be fixed by opening up the drive, inside somewhere there should be two small pots for adjusting the laser. this pic shows the pots in a ps2, ignore the text. Idealy you would use an ossiloscope to calibrate the laser properly...

I had this prob with a ps2 once, its quite a common problem.
For the ps2 I managed to get the cd working again but the dvd didnt work.
ok cheers mate, i guess i should try and sort this, i have been moaning about it for a week :)
Due to the fact that the same thing occured for him, i think it's not hardware failure? :X
i have tried it in another computer same issue, so i reckon this time it could be hardware, it won't read or write any form of cd, but the dvd is fine, so i have passed this on to my bro now, as he can still use the dvd side of the drive.
