Anyway to use a USB stick for OS

    Hi

My niece has dropped her net book and is now refusing to boot passed the boot screen, her friend has tested it and says the hard drive is broken and needs a new one.

So I wondered if I could just instal a Linux distro on a USB stick and run the OS off that, it would only be for web browsing,Facebook etc

    Thanks

Yes, easily. Just run something like Ubuntu from a USB drive as a 'live' OS: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/deskt...re-you-install

Something like this would be ideal if you don't get on with Ubuntu(though loads do) I use Linux Mint myself :-

There are also ways to run Windows 8 from a USB drive even if it isn't a certified Windows-to-Go one: I've got a 32GB microSD in a USB2 card reader than I can use to boot into a full 64bit Win 8 install....

But if it's just for a netbook I'd've thought £30 on a new hard drive would be a better investment than messing around with USB booting etc....

I use this whenever creating Linux USBs. Hope it helps.
