The nec 3500 is good. I have a black one in my shuttle at present and it is great. Fast and not a single coaster yet!

another vote for NEC3500 here as well

I've had nearly all the NEC's ( 2100,2500 now on 3500 ) and they do what they do nicely, no frills and very fast indeed.

Try comparing microdirect, aria and scan. One of them will usually have it dirt cheap.

The MSI ones are great, too! Whether or not you choose to buy from Scan, their product specifications are decent on there.

Another vote for the NEC3500. If you get one pop over to the cdfreaks NEC forum and flash to one of the modified firmwares which will allow you to do SL & DL bitsetting as well as Riplock and RPC1. They also allow you to write many 4x media at 8x
