hey all

in my roughly one year old system
i have:
kg7-raid
512mb generic ram
geforce 4 ti4200 (not stock cooler)
1800+ athlon xp @ 1.533ghz
sound blaster live
10/100 lan card

got home from school started it up had a quick look on emails, was listening to some music on media player

then suddenly media player started jittering, my comp had crashed

fair enough i said, i restarted and it seemed fine for about 10-20mins, when the exact same thing happened again, restarted again and it happened again

i think it is either just wanting to be left alone for a while to cool down (although it has only just been turned on, but my comp is usually quite hot), but i have been having probs like this for a while now(i think it may be the graphics card, as recently i have been having random screen standbys and sudden turn off turn on moniter)

anyone got any ideas as to what could be going on?

i suppose i dont mind if it is broken as im getting my new A64 system pretty soon (hopefully)

and im guessing it is just because it is old, most of the parts were second hand anyway

have you got Windows media player version 10?

Have you checked the PSU voltages? Memtest? Reseating the GFX card?

utdmleach, yep i have windows media player 10, its crap

daveham, i have not checked psu voltages dont have a clue how to, is it in bios?

but it is a remarkably rubbish psu, i have been meaning to get a new one since i got it free with my thermaltek xavier case! that was a great decision wasnt it! (i was young and neive)

Memtest? mem what?

yeh i have reseated the gfx card plenty of times, i thought i had fixed it at one point, but alas nope i have not!

thanks for all the ideas ill try them, what is a memtest?

cant wait to get my new system and never have to suffer any of this for around another 2 years, then it will be upgrade time again!

Memtest: http://www.memtest86.com or http://www.memtest.org. Both are essentially the same thing, and boot off a floppy to test the RAM.
