Re: Computer Crashing (Blackscreen, hard shutdown required)

Well guys it all went away for a while but now back with new issues!

So started doing the whole randomly reboot thing last night, then audio started freaking out and saying devices were being plugged/unplugged into the front audio jacks (both the Realtek software and Windows) so its completely screwed my sound out.

Reinstalled drivers and software etc. Unplugged EVERYTHING including mobo headers and still nothing.

As the only untested things left in the case are PSU, Mobo and CPU I'm going to take a stab at it and say Mobo so **** * ** * * * * ************** I'm using this opportunity to downsize, replace mobo with m-ATX and move back to Intel.

Well I got the credit card out today - MSI Z97M m-ATX board and i7 4790K will be delivered tomorrow. Will confirm that the mobo is at fault (well hopefully) and will allow me to downsize my box which I've wanted to do since moving flat.

Prob going to sell the FX8350 and throw the motherboard out of the window

Looks like it was the Mobo. Installed the Z97M and i7 4790K over the weekend and no issues anymore *touch wood*

Now to play with new CPU overclocking

Out of interest, can you actually feel any difference in performance since the CPU change?

I'm not sure yet. I've not done any video encoding yet and the only games I've installed again are WoW & CS:GO.

My idle temps are higher with the i7 @ 4.4 (but fans are spinning slower on auto) but at 100% it is a lot cooler than the 8350.

The only benchmark I have recorded from before is 3Dmark but thats on a old driver set for card so I'm not sure that would be a fair test.

I wasn't concerned with benchmarks, as we know the i7 will win that race at pretty much anything.

However, WoW is a good example where with an old Phenom you could feel the difference going to an Intel chip. The 8350 seems much better at running WoW than the Phenom II. The i7 still beats it in benchmarks, but measuring a difference isn't the same as being able to feel it. eg I built my mum a PC based around an old E3 Xeon chip, if it felt quicker than the Fx then she would have been getting an Fx. It felt the same, so I kept the Fx to avoid the hassle of motherboard upgrade in my main machine.

Or to put it another way, is it a case of "My Ferrari is faster than your Lambo" where they are both fast enough that any difference is academic? Nice to know you have the faster one mind

Re: Computer Crashing (Blackscreen, hard shutdown required)

    Fair enough.

Well WoW is smoother than it was before with less of those catchup hicups but that may be due to fresh Windows and fresh WoW install more than anything else (yet my old build was only 2 months old).

I'll be playing some BF4 and Dragon Age tonight where I may notice it more

For me the main advantage is I can now downsize from the R4 to a much smaller case which suits my new bedroom space much better

Re: Computer Crashing (Blackscreen, hard shutdown required)

Thanks, interesting to know. WoW has always been a big win for Intel so I would expect you to feel it there if anywhere.

Mind you, my graphics card is so old now that I need that replaced before I can think of getting a CPU upgrade. A multi monitor setup for Elite would be nice too
