New PSU trips the electric circuit
Hi
I have just received a new PSU
Coolermaster VS-Series 550W Semi Modular 80+ Gold Power Supply
I have installed the PSU in the case, but have not connected it to any components. The PSU is switched off and the power cord is plugged into the back of the PSU. When I put the plug into the wall socket, there is a spark and the electric for that circuit trips.
I've tried the power cord on another computer = ok
I've tried plugging into another wall socket and the electric trips again.
Are there any options other than send it back?
thanks for your help guys.
Re: New PSU trips the electric circuit
Send it back and hope it hasn't taken anything else with it.
Re: New PSU trips the electric circuit
Agreed, its not right and certainly shouldn't be doing that, I wouldn't try it in anything further in case you end up damaging something. Return it immediately.
Re: New PSU trips the electric circuit
thanks guys
Does anyone use a PSU tester before installing in their pc? Something like this

Re: New PSU trips the electric circuit
I have used testers in the past, usually only when there appears to be something wrong, but occasionally to see how noisy the PSU is.
Re: New PSU trips the electric circuit
Those 'testers' are usually little more than simple voltmeters. They do not take any significant load, so they do not measure important parameters such as regulation and ripple on the supply lines. As a go/nogo test they have some use and are a bit more convenient to use than a standard digital voltmeter.
As for the problem, which breaker trips? Is it the main power cut breaker or a breaker on the ring main?
The spark can just be the capacitors in the mains filter, or - depending on the size of the spark - a failed device.
As it is new, I'd be inclined to return it for a replacement.
Re: New PSU trips the electric circuit
Where is the spark? And are you plugging in then flipping the socket switch or just plugging it in to a live socket?
First thought is a short on the mains side inside the PSU, in which case just send it back.

Tbh I am not sure of the different. One of the switches flips on the main circuit board. Not all of the electricity in the house is tripped, just the sockets in the downstair rooms.

Just I as plug it into the live socket and the PSU is switched off.

Thanks for your help
I will send it back.
