Does this mean Win7 x64 knows not to defrag SSD?

Only a recent user of SSDs .

Disabled scheduled defrags as per info on the web regarding SSDs but now that rig has a HDD as well.

Went to enable scheduled defrags but I have to select all disks to make tick box work by HDD but as the SSD is not in that list does that mean it won't get defragged?



Win7 x64 SP1 fully updated, bios configured as AHCI and device manager show as recognised / drivers present.

Don't worry about the SSD getting no defrag. In newer OSes something called the 'TRIM' command takes care of most of your SSD's needs.

Run a quick programming, like SSD Life or AS-SSD to check if your SSD is OK. Otherwise don't worry.

Yep aware of TRIM from swotting up before purchase of SSD .

May just schedule a defrag with above options and see if it says never run by SSD .

SSD is new, for the moment Crucial Storage Executive has all info I need but will also check those programs you mention out .

+1. I've run ssds and HDDs on win 7 for years and never disabled the defrag. not had a problem.

I don't know if its actually correct, or its just one of those myths, but there was a lot of talk about Windows 7 only handled SSDs properly if it was freshly installed with the SSD in place.

That user makes some incorrect recommendations so I'd be wary if treating them as a knowledgeable source, but I don't have any evidence either way to know if you need the SSD to be present on install or not.

Exactly. Its not necessarily a simple yes/no answer either. That just happened to be the first result returned that wasnt 3+ years old.

I suspect some of the information may have been accurate once, and possibly pertained to disk modes rather than windows features.

Its always possible that things changed in service packs or updates.

Cheers guys all for info! I've sent scheduled scan any how and will add screenshot after it has ran this evening.

Reasons being list not have SSD partion in it so Win7 has detected it either when freshly installed / zero rotation speed / random read performance (the last two I've read being mentioned on other threads on intel / microsoft official forums). Also read that some SSDs may not get detected thus double checking is good idea.

Isn't pretty much every SSD sold with built-in TRIM on the controllers anyway, meaning that even if Windows doesn't clean up after itself, the drive still does the busywork?

Trim and defrag are different things. Running defrag on an SSD is not recommended at all.

Just thought I'd update this thread with a screenie showing defrag is not doing the SSD as Win 7 is aware of it as earlier highlighted in thread.
