Dual monitor working

Hi, I'm have an HP PC (8300 Elite) that has two graphic outputs - 1 VGA and 1 Display Port. I also have two monitors, one has VGA only input and the other VGA & DVI.

Normally I use just the VGA monitor but thought why not connect the 2nd (it has nothing else to do) so I connected using a lead that is Display port to DVI.

The operating system (Win7 Pro) does not detect the second monitor even though the (2nd) monitor input has been changed to DVI.

Any suggestions that I might try or do I need to install a2nd graphics card?

It may not be possible to run both display port and VGA - but you need to look up the exact spec of the machine you have.

firstly try each monitor alone on the relevant connector. Make sure they both work indepentendly

next, you need the display port as the PRIMARY screen, and the VGA as the secondary screen.

Mine is a microtower and, according to spec, should run both.

I know that both monitors are working but will test the ports idenpendantly and see what happens........

Can you get it to recgonise the monitors individually with the other unplugged? Restart the machine with each monitor in turn. You should at least see the POST and BIOS info, then the boot screen displayed. If not, check BIOS (or it's a duff cable) if so, then it's a windows issue in which case i) check graphics driver and ii) windows settings (NB to set multiple displays in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Display\Screen Resolution.
