    Z170-a + i5 upgrade problems.

    Hi All
Following on the tradition of 1st posts being a cry for help, here goes.
I have just fitted a scan 3xs oc bundle to my existing rig , motherboard, cup, cooler and new psu - spec as per profile with exception of the graphics card ( not fitted yet), and with the addition of a bluray drive.

The old system was a 7 year old Athlon 2 setup. Dual booting win 7 pro 64bit and windows 7 home 32 bit

My problem is that I cannot get the system to boot from the hard drives it goes into a blue screen throws up error codes and the hangs (can't make a note of the codes as it only shows them fleetingly).
I have tried booting with one drive connected - tried both home and pro in turn.

I have changed both drives to gpt format , didn't work so have changed back to mbr.
I have tried windows repair to no avail, I have also tested the drives work on the old rig by setting it up on a table - both drives booted ok.
Looking around the net I have seen that on the z97 series boards that you had to set the bios for iec hdd's where as it Is set for AHCI as default, I cannot see such a setting in the new bios- however there is a tab for legacy OPROM - unfortunately made no difference.
I don't think it is an installation issue , as the bios is seeing the hard drives.

    Any ideas greatly appreciated.

You presumably know you can't just swap hard drive into an almost entirely new spec of system and have it work? You will most likely have to install Windows 7 from scratch, which itself isn't a straight forward process on Z170, but your motherboard manual should contain instructions for how to do so.

You might be able to find an option for legacy IDE.

Failling that, I would pop the drives back in the old PC, follow the guides to switch windows to AHCI, then shutdown and connect them to the new PC.

There is no other way that I am aware of, apart from a fresh install (which could be better in the long run).

you can only install windows on 1 pc. Microsoft makes a image of your hardware. When you chanche hardware (motherbord - cpu), windows will see this as a illigal act. And will crash the system. You'll have to do a fresh install.

    You are misinformed.

    Re: Z170-a + i5 upgrade problems.

From my experience over the years, if you have Windows installed on a PC and want to use the same install on a new system, DO NOT CHANGE SYSTEMS FROM AMD TO INTEL OR INTEL TO AMD.
The chipset drivers will BSOD the OS.

If you're still keen on using the same install, I suggest taking an image of the drive, uninstalling all the drivers and try and plug it into the new system. I don't recommend it, but if you really want to do it, that migh be your only chance. I will not probably run very well.

If you still can't boot from it, use a Windows disk to do a system repair. Check this http://www.pcworld.com/article/24319...tallation.html
