PC turns off when I turn on the light or oven
I'm experiencing my PC turning off when I turn on the light switch on my unit's ceiling and the same thing with the stove. It happens when I turn the light on as well as the miniture oven. I didn't initially get this problem occurring with either the light switch or the oven but it just started happening and now it's every time I flip the switch now. I don't have a UPS but want some advise on it please. I live in a rented unit in Sydney and getting the landlord to address this issue would be one massive uphill battle for me I am sure!
I should also add that it is really difficult to get the computer to switch back on. The motherboard light's up for a second and the fans spin for that second but it turns off like it's protecting it's self. I get around the problem by turning off the power supply at the back of the machine as to stop all power to the motherboard and components. It's about a 1 in 5 chance that I will get it to turn back on. Not sure if the getting it to turn back on problem is related to the turning off problem. your thoughts?
thanks
PS - Posted a reply to a thread that was 10 years old here that was the same problem that I have.

The PSU must be old. I think the capacity of the PSU to deal with the PCs power requirements diminished over the years. But can't deny the fact that the issue is partially shared with the power socket situation in your property.
You could measure the voltage/current in the socket once your light/mini oven is on. Just to see the extent of your situation.

check the earth in the socket. saw something very similar recently and the earth was floating about in the socket.

Thanks Bonebreaker777 and bytejunkie. I replaced the PSU and all is good so far. I've turned on and off the lights as well as the stove and no PC turn offs. I think you're right about it being a combination of problems so I may find myself replacing PSU's every now and again I guess.
I'm in a rented apartment and getting the land lord to address the electrical issues would be one mother huge uphill battle I'm afraid!!

If that is the issue for the OP I would defiantly say he try and get it looked at as, if the earth isn't actually connected then it isn't acting as a safety precaution for the wiring and if there is a fault with the live wire, could be deadly.

You want to get this addressed, although in this case the power issue just caused issues turning on your PC, this should not happen, and might suggest a bigger (more worrying) grounding problem with the accommodation.

Problem solved by replacing the power suppl unit (PSU). no turn offs now and I can run all my electrical appliances. I sure did waste some money trying to get this fixed though. 2 mothrboards, amd cpu, different ram. what a bugger, I sold some of it back on ebay to recoup costs. I thought PSU he lease likely but it turned to be it.
My pc runs like a dream now though
Big thanks to everyone who posted to the thread helping me

You should still get the electrics in your home checked otherwise you could run into problems again. I had a similar problem with an older PSU I had.
Also, if I touched the case and something metal, like a radiator, I used to get small electric shocks.
The new PSU didn't last long, so I got the housing association to send an electrician out and there was indeed a fault with the internal wiring in my home.
