Old Mac troubles

Hi All,

I bought my wife an MacBook Air 11 inch Laptop(Intel Core 2 Duo 1.4GHz, 2GB RAM, 64GB Flash Storage, NVIDIA GeForce 320M Graphics) back in the day which absolutley loves.

However, it's running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and Safari is now so old that we're getting "This version of Safari is no longer supported" messages all over the net.

What OSX can this hardware run in order to get a more modern browser ?
Alternatively - Do I just download Firefox and install that ?

All advice gratefully received, as I really know very little about Macs.

According to that, this Air only goes as high as 10.6.5 - So I'm doing OK with 10.6.8.
Chrome you say ? Are there extensions such as Ghostery and Adblock ?

Try uBlock instead of ABP - much lighter on RAM.

Running El Capitan or Mavericks (cant remember which) on on my MB Air which I believe is the same spec as yours (mine's an early 2009). Think it may have taken a little jiggery pokery to get it installed but there's guides all over the interwebs and it's very easy.

PS. Chrome is balls on this Apple hardware spec and crippled graphics card, Safari runs much better for some reason much to my annoyance.

Edit* sorry just realised that yours is an 11" & mine is a 13" but i'd think the process is the same.

your late 2010 model can support the latest OSX 10.11 El Capitan, but I would not recommend upgrading to this as I've noticed 4GB MacBook Airs/Pros perform slower after the upgrade

Useful support link though - thanks for that! :)

I've found El Capitan (Apple seem to be following Android in having odd names for releases, rather than sticking to version numbers) to be slightly heavier on resources than its predecessor, possibly the result of the additional security measures introduced, so doing the minimum upgrade necessary might be a good plan.
