Computer Turning its self off

Hi, I am having a problem with my computer at the moment in which in turns its self off after about 30 seconds to a minute of running time. The computer boots and posts every time fine, and goes into the BIOS screen alerting me that the CPU speed was set incorrectly, even though I haven't adjusted this, each and every time. It then shuts its self down, and in order to turn it back on again I have to turn it off at the wall.

My Specs are;
Deer 300W PSU,
ASUS A7V8X-X Mobo,
Athlon XP 1600,
Akasa AK825 fan and heatsink with fan control unit,
768MB Samsung pc2100,
XFX Geforce 5700LE 128MB,
Sound Blaster 128.

I left home yesterday with the computer running fine and have returned to it now to have this problem with it. I have tried an assortment of things such as removing the sound card and graphics card and clearing the CMOS all of which have had no effect on my problem. Any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks in advance,

When I get the chance to navigate the BIOS menu all seems to be fine with the temps, running at 33 for the CPU temp, and 24 ish for Mobo temp, and the fan is stuck on max so is running about 2500-3000. At times however CPU temp fails to show up on the hardware monitor.

i think i had a similar problem, have u tried using a different opperating system like Windows ME or 98 i know u would prefer to stay wher u r but this might help try using 1 for a while then if u still have same prob i dont know... but ... if it does work and it doesnt turn it self off try switching bak and see if u still have same problem

My problem is I can't even get this far, it just takes me straight into the BIOS, will either, restart ok when I say save and exist and then power down, or will just power down straight away.

Just a quick update, been running fine in the BIOS now for about ten mins and temperture of CPU has settled to 46 and case at 34, the fan is running fine at 4000 rpm... however still wont let me get past BIOS, whenever I attempt to exit it just turns off.

Sounds to me to be one of two things in my experience.

1. PSU is underpowered/failing. Try booting with just the barebones. What make and how old is your PSU.

2. Capacitors on the motherboard maybe kapput. This happened on a friends board. He was experiencing exactly what you describe. Check the mobo for leaking or brown capoacitors.

Indeed, could be a capacitor prob, check to se if any of them are domed/blown.

Well I took the whole thing apart the other day. Gave it all a good clean, including the processor. It's now working... damn computers hehe

lol i got a simular prob, cept mine boots, gonna take it apart this weekend and slap new cooler on and new thermal paste, hope mine stops giving me the cpu has changed / unworkable screeen at boot up

Lol - so much for my knowledge! Sometimes it's the simple things eh?

If its losing its bios settings you can always try replacing the cmos battery
