Win XP Home OEM will not boot

Hi, I think I have corrupted winlogon.exe on a Win XP Home OEM Edition as I was messing with it before the problems.
Now the PC keeps restarting itself without fully booting up. Can I restore it from the original CD using recovery console? If so does anyone know the commands to do so.
Also is there a way to use system restore without booting into safe or normal mode?

Yes, but not if SP2 is installed. Recovery Console must be added before you add SP2, otherwise it won't work. Mike Rowe has much to answer for, jus' my 2 cents worth....

Have you tried going 'last known good' configuration, for that may do it. (Boot holding F8, then follow prompts).

Yes I tried 'last known good',,,no joy. I have sp2 installed as well so i guess that rules out recovery console. What about using bartPE bootdisk and just copying a new one over from the xp home cd? will it work or is the winlogon.exe modified for the specific pc configuration?

I'll check on other SP2 options, but need to do some more research on this before I can give an answer. Will get back to you on this.

If you mean copying a file across, it should work. As far as I know, winlogon.exe is not configured specifically for an individual machine, but again I'll need to check.

Have checked to a point, and found this. Recovery Console can be run from the XP CD even if SP2 is installed. It appears that not being able to run it following the addition of SP2 is no longer valid, and is now actually vaunted as being necessary to the successful uninstallation of SP2 should that be necessary. As for the actual commands; well, that's another story, as I will have to ask someone else for this.

Will it get into safe mode? If so try a system restore .

Maybe repair windows using the original windows disk.

It would help if you could turn off "system restart after error" that way you would see a BSOD on boot-up and at least get an idea of what's wrong. Brain's a bit foggy atm so can't remember how to do that! Anyone.

It won't boot into safe mode. I think I am gonna boot off bartpe and copy a new file across from the original cd. Failing that I can see a format and reinstall coming my way.

I managed to fix it, boot from bartpe disk, copied over winlogon.ex_ from the xp cd renamed, rebooted, problem solved. Thanks for looking at it mariner.

BartPE sounds like a bit of a life saver. Could have maybe done with that last week when I totally borked my system.
