    Unhappy Via - ATI - Mircosoft

    Can anyone help with a problem with using the via cat drivers 4.12's, as you might be aware these drivers installed via's AGP 2/3 controller driver, which was then remove in later cat drivers. Microsoft say to use their version of the file which comes with sp2, so i did a clean install with sp2 and used their driver the UAGP35.sys which still didn't help (ps main problem is games crashing with ati's auto recover gfx program). i found out microsoft had two drivers to choose between so i then installed the other driver the GAGp30KX.sys which then worked, ie the games didn't crash but now fast write if off and AGp is also off.

    can anyone help me out? (if i've missed info just ask)

    ps i have the KW7 motherboard.

    regards death

    What's your gfx card.

    Usually for better stability it's recommended to;

    Turn off VPU recover. Turn off Fast writes.

    I have a ATI 9600Pro, i know its an old car but it supports agp8x so i want to use it. i have no say on fast write its grayed out (its off)
    i've tried turning VPU recover off but that didn't help just means the only way to get out of a game is to restart pc.

    Firstly, grab the Cat 5.1s as they're out now.

    Also, grab the hyperion drivers form www.viaarena.com. - put these on first.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    Fast write is usually greyed out if it is disabled in the bios. Also as mentioned by my colleague Kez, get the via chipset drivers installed on the system. If you dont have the via drivers on and run the Direct X Diagnostics (dxdiag from the run command) you dont get the hardware acceleration or AGP support at all you will see.

    Also going back to fast write, I have found I get better performance out of my 9600 Pro card if it is disabled (Also disable the ATI Trueform in the drivers control panel)

    I have the 5.1's with control panel as the others wouldn't give me a refresh rate above 60Hz ( you all know how much that hurts the eyes).

    In the bios the settings are as follows

    CPU to AGP Post Write [Enabled]
    AGP Aperture Size [256M]
    X AGP 3.0 Mode [8X]
    AGP Driving Control [Auto]
    X AGP Driving Value DA
    AGP Fast Write [Enabled]
    AGP Master 1 WS Write [Disabled]
    AGP Master 1 WS Read [Disabled]
    AGP 3.0 Calibration cycle [Enabled]

    Should these be different?

    I’m also running Hyperion Version - 455vp1, but these don’t affect display drivers any more since Microsoft told VIA to remove that section of the drivers as they were deemed to be the problem in the pervious drivers.

    In DirectX Diagnostic Tool under the Display tab I have DirectDraw Acceleration Enabled and Direct3D Acceleration enabled but AGP texture Acceleration is Not Available, how I get than enabled?

    For your comment on fast write it would be nice to know I could have the option to turn it on or off, weather I gain any benefit from having it on or off don’t matter just yet I would like the option to test it.

    Thanks for the info so far hope this info above can help you work out what I’ve missed or done wrong.
