Black screen after upgrading graphics card

    Hi all,

I have upgraded by aging GTX460 with a GTX 1060 6GB card. As soon as the card was installed and I powered up i got a black screen, no Bios, no signal. The PC is powering up and is going through start up. A few facts:

    - I replaced the new card with the original and still no signal
    - I tested the power supply with my Dr Power II unit, all okay (also no Mobo beeps on start up)
    - The new card requires less power than the old one so I don't think it's that.
    - My mobo has no onboard graphics so I don't think there should be any onboard display adapter/driver causing interference
    - As I have no onboard graphics I can't access the BIOS or safe mode at boot
    - I had removed my original card and reinstalled it a few weeks earlier without any problems
    - I have been using a DVI cable

Any help suggestions would be welcome!

    My system

    Q6600 @ 2.6Ghz
    Palit GTX 460
    4GB RAM
    Mobo A-bit IP-35
    LCD monitor (DVI input)

I would put a guess on your kit being so old it has no idea what you just shoved into the pcie slot?

Re: Black screen after upgrading graphics card

Does the old 460 work if you put it back in and re-install drivers ?
(You didn't mention it, but I assume you uninstalled all of the AMD drivers and reinstalled NV ones)

Re: Black screen after upgrading graphics card

    Both cards are Nvidia

Trouble is it wouldn't have had a BIOS update for years.

The entire system will be a massive bottleneck for the card and the card wouldn't run at it's best on the slower PCIE bus either, even if the rest of the system could cope.

Sounds like you either knocked something while installing the card or gave something a static shock.

Check the PSU power cable to the motherboard first, not sure how else you would get a black screen with both cards.

Re: Black screen after upgrading graphics card

True GoNzo the BIOS is probably in a bad state, and yes the card would have been bottlenecked, but I was hoping to upgrade the board and processor at a slightly later date. I still don't understand why the monitor fails to detect the card when I have reverted to the old card though?

I reconnected the mobo leads after I checked the PSU and everything sounded like it was booting up fine.

It's a mystery to me how the old card is getting a black screen as well.

If that is the case take everything off, start back with just ram (1 stick) and no drives + old card

Thanks for that, I'll give it a try. Might try the VGA output first just in case.

I had taken a Ram stick out to take look at it and replaced it again before installing the new card, could this have caused a problem (it was clicked in properly).

Almost certainly the problem! Now, you should have lead with that statement lol It's probably not in correctly or you zapped it.
