    Sony CD Re-Writer Problem

I've recently built a pc for someone which has a Sony CD Re-Writer OEM Drive. I've also installed Win XP Pro. Now, the drive is recognised as a CDRW in My Computer and I'm even able to burn stuff onto CDs using the built-in XP burning facility. however, i installed Ahead Nero to be able to copy and back up cds and for some reason, it won't recognise the drive. In fact, all it comes up with is the "Image Recorder". Obviously it's going to be a nightmare to copy a cd as an ISO and then burn the ISO onto another CD so i'd prefer to copy the cd direct to another.

Does anyone have any ideas? Would it work to use the software that normally comes with retail boxed cdrw drives? Is that one called B Gold Recorder or something?

    Many thanks in advance.

    Andy

The version of NERO you are using must be for a different drive, when I got my Sony CDRW drive it came with B's recorder. B's recorder isnt to bad when you get used to using it, can do virtually everything NERO does, wizards on it are really good. Also does a bog standard disc to disc function.

If you got NERO say for a Lite On drive it will only work with the Lite On products, you will need to get another version of NERO from Ahead that has full support for all drive make and models and pay for a license for it as it will be a trial version.

    Ah right, ok then.

It is definately a Sony drive. But unfortunately with it being an OEM drive i didn't get any software with it. Do you think i'd be able to download a trial version or proper version of B's Recorder somewhere?!?

Free version of Deep Burner here
or free trial version of Nero here

CDburnerXP Pro is free too, but I've not tested it, so I can't vouch for its usability/stability.

Are you sure? I have used many OEM Nero installation CD's that came with many CD drives over the years, and never came across this problem. Anyway, if this is the problem, take a look on eBay. You can pick up a version 6+ of Nero Ultra for less than £5.

Yep, very sure. It is a strange problem I will admit. But you reckon it could be a hardware problem maybe, regardless whether the PC and Win XP recognise it and allow you to burn using the built-in facility??

I'm 99% sure thats software related too. Get a copy of Deepburner as already recomended (it's free). I bet that will work,

Ok. I'll try that then. Which one though will allow CD Copying like Nero? I can't really see anything like that on Deepburner
