Windows 10 won't remember any new changes or settings

Too summarize this, my windows 10 won't remember NEW icon placement, where windows are placed, what monitor my task bar is assigned too, which sound card I've assigned etc.

This problem occured both with and without sleep on, and appears to do it when i turn all 3 monitors + my tv off, or even when i only have just 2 monitors connected. It just acts as though its being reverted the minute i leave my machine alone to whatever the last recorded state was.

And to rule out the try this and that, I've already disabled all my monitors sound devices, deleted hidden hardware etc and they will all be back on the next time i come back to my pc. Not sure of the time frame it takes for this to occur but in the morning things are always back to how they were.

So what in windows controls its current state and why is this happening?

Other tid bits. Install was brand new 3 weeks ago, windows update was ran on install. Only issue I had at that time was the MBR failed to auto boot the main ssd so I had to run a fix on that. Beyond that I don't know if it ever worked. But it had to have because the icons are scattered on my desk but just won't change any farther as if window is in a now frozen non changeable state.

I had pretty much the same situation (nothing saved/stuck past a certain point) on Win7 around a year ago. The root cause turned out to be a damaged user profile. Event viewer was flooded with user profile service warnings/errors

I would try a reset of your profile, there is a registry key which needs deleting in order to do this

Re: Windows 10 won't remember any new changes or settings

I've ruled on the idea that it may be my TV i have attached with a 4k hdmi. It seems when I don't have it on, eventually it will cause my monitors to all cycle off and then 1 by 1 they cycle till they all come on. I used to think this was a n issue with Path Of Exile while i played it. Till it started doing it the other day and I noticed this seemed to be happening while I had the tv off. I think the HDMI is somehow crashing the driver detection for that port in windows and it just resets all my ports. Since It's disabled now, I haven't had an issue. But this could just be luck.

Re: Windows 10 won't remember any new changes or settings

It does appear that Windows 10 is trying to be clever in multi-monitor setups. If your method hasnt fixed it theres a few more things to try:

As Bambooz suggests a damaged profile, people have managed to correct it by simple going from Medium to Large sized icons then back again, seems to clear out some dodgy/corrupted registry settings in some cases.

Others have found by not allowing your monitor to go to sleep, but activate the screensaver and manually turning off monitors is better.

You can also try deleting your icon cache file, this may be corrupt (show hidden files):
    C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local

    You're definitely not alone:
