    help computer making strange sound

    Hi im new here
Just wondering if I could have some help...my computer has just started to make a strange sound it sounds like a dial up modem, 2 different tones ringing one after the other kinda like a siren. I think its my dial up modem but I no longer use it as I now use an external broadband modem.
So far I have unplugged my computer for a few minutes, uninstalled the old modem...but its still making the strange noise.
My computer seems to be running fine though.
    any ideas?
    thanks

im pretty sure its not the modem - more likely the motherboard is trying to tell you something via the PC speaker.

are there any messages when you start up the PC?
do you need to press F1 to continue or anything like that?

This is unlikely to be true.

When you say 'uninstalled', have you physically removed the modem? I'd try that next, if you're sure it's that. Otherwise, I'd guess it's a motherboard BIOS beep, except that you say the PC boots as normal...

Sniff Sniff, he could be telling porkies. (A virus rewriting the bios has to be pretty damn specific not to erase any functionality from the PC, which u stated its working ok, just the bleeps)

I think it sounds like an overheat Alarm, depending on you own PC compentence, you may wanna open her up and clean out the dust (use cans of compressed air, not a hoover!). Also again dependant on where u know what ur doing, there may be a section in the bios that shows the CPU temp, and lets u set what temp the alarm will go off @.

But remember only go into the bios/pc case if you know what ur doing.

Usually by pressing Delete while the computer starts - have a look as it starts up to see if there are any messages saying 'Press .... to .....' - then press that!

You answered that one yourself, get ur mate to do it, .

Seriously, the potential different types of BIOS out there, and the fact ur not 100% on what you would be doin in there, tells me you shouldnt ideally be in there. Im not try to sound like an arrogant git, so if i do i appologise.

Anyone else back me on that one or am I being a git?

On A side not its happened to me before, a friend of mine saw me deleting some stuff (back in the day when Dos 6.2 and Win 3.11 was the the norm). He decided he wanted to delete something on his machine, and typed from the root dir, "deltree *.*", and proceeded to press y,y,y,y,y. Only after he confirmed the deletion of a dir called Windows, did he think something was wrong and then called me!
