    Maxtor One Touch 2

I have been having trouble with my external HD. (using firewire)
The first problem I am having is the drive does not show up at all but if I leave it on for a few hours then switch it on and of a couple of times it shows up.
The second problem is once windows sees the drive after a few hours I get write errors with a yellow warning triangle and I have to switch it off.

I am led to believe by Maxtor this is a SP2 problem but I have tried the hotfix from Microsoft and it does not work it actually makes things worse (blue screen of death).

    Any help would be appreciated

    Thanks

    Hi emul8,
I also have the One Touch 2 (300GB), and I am aware that a number of people have had fairly similar problems,so I would presume you have a faulty drive.

I would suggest however, that you try out another of the 2 firewire ports, and more importantly, try connecting to it using USB2. Some reviews online have stated that under Windows XP, the drive does not automatically show up, so the drivers had to be installed. This did not personally happen to me, and I have Service Pack 2 ( ), but again, its worth a try.

    Hope I could help.

Just out of interest, does your One Touch 2 make a horrible scratchy noise now and again?

I find the drive dissapears from 'My Computer' after long periods of no use, and after connecting it, it takes about a minute to get up and going and located in My Computer.

Onto the problem of backing up the files. I know it can be hard, expecially if the reason you bought a new HDD was cos you didn't have enough space in the first place.

I suggest you ring whoever you bought the HDD from, and explain your predicament, and more precisely how you can't move the files to your current HDD. Tell them for that reason, they need to send you a replacement first, and you will then transfer the file over onto it, and send the faulty drive back.

Also, a word of warning. Make sure you erase any sensitive files off the faulty HDD, and just reformat over the rest. To erase files, use the 'Gutmann Method' which writes over a file 35 times in particular ways to completely remove any chance of data reconstruction. A good program to use to erase files is 'Eraser 5.7', made by Heidi.

Hope I could help, if you need anymore advice, don't hesitate to ask.
