    Windows 10 update issues

I shutdown W10 and was given a message that updates were taking place.

It reboots and takes longer than normal. Finally we get to a screen with dialog asking if I want locations turned on, speech recognition on, advertising ID on, Diagnostics on. I say no to all. Finally boot into desktop and start menu doesn't work. It's inoperable. Tried to click on search box, no response. The taskbar is likewise. Tried restarting a few times but same issue.

Log into account and screen stays black or loads wallpaper but seems to freeze. Did a reset, logged into account and stuck on black screen. No dialog boxes this time. Restarted again and this time start menu loads. It isn't as zippy as before. Search box is not responsive. Logged into non-admin account on the system and the whole updates cycles runs again. "It's taking longer than expected" ...

    Laptop has ssd.

Any clues as to what's happening / happened.

    Re: Windows 10 update issues

Maybe some files windows files are corrupted. If you can get to a command prompt or powershell window from task manager, you can try running the system file checker, might be worth a shot: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/...m-file-checker

If this doesn't work, then maybe you've got driver problems, but that will be hard to resolve if the machine is hanging.

I've had a few problems with the Creators update on some machines. If it was me, I think I would download the install media, boot from that and do a system reset, preserving my files. https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/...all-windows-10

    Hope this helps!

    Re: Windows 10 update issues

I've had this and I have another to sort within my family this week

In short, it's a pain in the butt!

Try starting in Safe Mode: (hold down the Shift key then restart the PC using the normal restart menu bottom left)

    Choose:
    Troubleshoot
    Advanced Options
    Startup Settings

    then choose Safemode with Networking

hopefull you can then crack on & try to run Windows Update from there
