    4K movie playback from pc

    Hi,

So I have finally transitioned from my projector 1080 to a 75 inch 4K tv. Hardware specs below.

The problem I have is I have grabbed some 4K mov content from online, multiple things, for playback through my 4K tv and I am seeing my cpu shoot up to 95% usage, several tests later and I am sure it’s not network related Andy definitely cpu and ma6be a little bit gourmet related,

I am running a AMD NUC which is probably 4 year old tech so it’s not really a surprise that it can’t cope.

Question is, I don’t wan5 to spend any more thanks neccesary so what is the cheapest cpu on the market that will playback 4K? Will an old i5 2nd gen cope or will I be better off with an i3 6th gen?

Open to suggestions, I also need to pass through dots hd matster to my amp, typically I have done this through a amd gourmet using hdmi. Again open to suggestions what have you.
    Many thanks

Re: 4K movie playback from pc

Streamer boxes? Can you give me a clue? I like to have a pc usually with a blu ray player and then I can grab any content I want. My essentials are full 4K playback with atmos / dts passthrough

By the way, thanks for the reply Cat. I post here a couple of times a year, it’s my “go to” forum for advice and it’s always you that reply’s. Love it!

I am not upto speed with the latest ones - but stuff like the Mi Box,Chromecast Ultra and Roku Streaming Stick+ and so,should be able to decode 4K content, but you will need to check regarding the formats you are looking at.

Regardng CPUs,IIRC its Kaby Lake onwards which apparently supports it with the IGP,and Nvidia cards like the GT1030.

  5. Received thanks from:

Re: 4K movie playback from pc

    What a headache!

I have bought a nvidia shield, it looks like it can handle 4K and DST had master through Plex, that should do the trick. Only 179, a pc was looking to be around the £250plus a gpu, adds up quickly Will report back.
