Re: Black screen when playing game

when was the game released, what OS was the spec for? Sometimes all that's needed is to pop some of the dat and ini files from one place into a different folder.

Is it medal of honour spearhead by any chance or more recent?

I have MOH:SH running on Windows 10, I had to change the compatibility settings Right Click > Properties > Compatibility tab and from memory I set it to Win 7

Re: Black screen when playing game

Hi it was medal of honour Pacific (something) deleted now, I tried it in win 7 compatibility mode but got the same result, so managed to get my son to come up with a spare monitor and a working hdmi lead and have found out that it must have been my hdmi lead (although I tried 3 of them) as his equipment worked and he changed stuff about and it was the cable (I hope) anyway he signed into his world of tanks account and played for half an hour and everything worked okay, no black screens so fingers cross, many thanks for the replies

Re: Black screen when playing game

I've tried to play many old games which should in theory work with poor results. It's amusing that these same games often have a new version coming out soon, such as COD MW 1 which had a new version coming out with fancy new textures and so on. The old one just stopped working properly at that point. It's more likely a lack of old code maintenence where it's not making any money than a conspiracy to make people upgrade.

Re: Black screen when playing game

Ah, MoH: Pacific Assault. My first genuine online PC game, loved it to bits.

Also doesn't work on my W10 PC, though I only fiddled for a short while with compatibility settings.

Re: Black screen when playing game

okay update its back and found the fault
just did a clean install on a new win 10 build msi gaming pro carbon with power color RX580 and 16Gb team pro @ 3200. so if I run with the latest amd drivers on launching games (subnautica, guild wars 2) I get sound but black screen also get the same with the beta drivers, but if I go into device manager and update the display drivers which they do update then everything works but I get an error message saying wattman had to reset to defaults because of a crash, but this should be running defaults.
So any help with this ?
    Thanks

This Reddit post might have the answer for you.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/AskGames/co...on_windows_10/

Windows 8/10 no longer has the ability to "Disable desktop composition" which is what solved it for a lot of people running on Windows 7.

Your problem is quite common on the interwebs. It appears the game is just too old for W10 and unles you're prepared to work around a few things it won't work.

If you can get a more modern version on Origin for example that might be an easier way to go.

My take here is that the problem has progressed from being about MoH to being about games in general not displaying when using AMD official drivers, and Wattman etc crashing when using the Windows provided drivers?

As to that problem, I'd suggest never using a version of GPU drivers given to you by Windows, especially Windows Update or the Device Manager driver updater, they always seem to be out of date and very rarely worked properly on my PCs.

Don't have anything useful on why the display wasn't showing, but I'd start by uninstalling whatever AMD programs and display drivers you have, running the latest full Adrenalin installer again, and checking if it still happens. If it does, do you have Freesync? What's your monitor like, how have you got it connected?

And yeah, as said those older MoH games are probably beyond saving, mine ran but just randomly crashed to desktop when I tried it a year or two back. Didn't matter where I was in the game or what video settings I used. Maybe it hated modern GPU tech.
