how to remove black adhesive/compound from cpu

hi i have a medion p4 2.8 pc and i want to upgrade mobo( might get a asus vinatage barebones), my problem is the cpu is stuck to stock heatsink with some black paste or glue ? how can i remove without damaging cpu or can't i ? thnx in advance

Thats sounds like a black thermal adhesive pad, the sort that heatsinks get stuck to ram chips on graphics cards with...Is it really stuck hard so you can't pull it off? If it is then your best bet is probably goign to be to try and heat up the heatsink to soften up the adhesive then with a mixture of gentle pulling and a razor blade slowly try and seperate them ut make sure you don't bend those pins

have u done this before ? when u mean heat do i run machine for a while to generate some good heat ? and then attempt it

Well i've never had a cpu stuck to a heatsink with them previously, thankfully you don't find that happening much, but i've had heatsinks stuck fast to chips on graphic card boards, you could run the machine I guess to heat it, can you actually get the chip and heatsink out in one lump or can you not reach the relese lever?

the lever isnt touched as i cant get to it but i can pull out cpu and heatsink togther, putting them back is akward.

Pull them out beings you want to seperate them anyhow, if you leave them in and do it your likely to damage the pins or the board or both. You could use a hairdryer to heat up the adhesive as you can control the heat and direction and work more easily outside the case. Your chip is built to stand pretty high temps like 80C so that will be ok, then you goign to have to heat up the heatsink and gradually try and seperate them

done it :D used a sharp blade and peeled the pad in-wards and a gentle lil push it was off mucho's gracias , just put some ceramique on it and temp has already gone down by 4 degree's, nice 1
