Booting from an external drive

Just fitted an external drive with xp pro on it and I want to boot from this device but when I do it starts booting gets so far then reboots the system in a loop.

I have tried it on usb & firewire, made it the first boot option in bios but still no go so any ideas on how to make it boot or is it because it is not ide or sata that this is the problem

BIOS flash to latest version then give it another whirl. Try to pull up some documentation on your motherboard and see if externel device booting is fully support, the technology is still quite immature.

Thanks for your reply, just to let you know i have flashed to the latest bios and also gone thro a lot of procedures and like you say the technology is very immature thanks to Bill Gates, just wish he would get his act together and complete this OS. so at the moment I am not holding out for a solution
