    10kbps

    Hey guys,

I have a little problem with my internet connection I have a broadband account which should be around 2.3mbps. For the last 4 weeks its been fine with good speeds however for the last two days it has been running at around 10kbps Nothing has changed regarding the pc software, hardware or the line itself this problem seems to have come from nowhere I do use an extension cable for the line which is old, do these just give up on bandwidth? Is Tiscali launching a plan to foil my nightly adventuring on WoW Ive tried tiscali tech support, they dont have a clue. All connections have been checked the drivers have been re-installed to no avail, any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated thanks R

Well if there tech supports anything like most other techsupport departments they dont talk to other departments in the same company so they probably wouldnt know if you'd been cut off for not paying your bill or anything tbh...

    Really I have 2GB

They should just cherge me accordingly not slow my connection speed down!
If this is the case Tiscali should issue a disclaimer to their customers explaining the situation, a little email shouldn’t be that taxing for them. It’s strange of a large corporate company to suddenly loose the ability to communicate with their customers at times like this

2 GB doesn't go that far though. BT offer 30 IIRC on the higher priced options of theirs. AFAIK it isn't just downloading that counts towards your limit, general usage (text, pics, and WoW) will all eat into this limit.

I don't know if its tiscali that my mates with, but he pays a flat rate for a 2Mb connection with a limited download limit, and then pays a set amount per GB after that. I don't know quite how quickly online gaming is going to use your limit up, but if I were you I'd look to pay a little more (what's £5 a month between friends?) to increase your limit if not your bandwidth too.

Disclaimer - If the above isn't quite true I apologise, I've been at work for far too long already and my brain is fried!

No joy last night, it is a mystery to them. In my network connection window under the high-speed connection/Lan heading there are three sets of screens two of which are active, they are titled 1394 and the last a local area connection that’s inactive. I cannot disable the first two for some reason and do not know why they are active or what purpose they serve? However before all this started I remember double clicking on of those two by accident instead of the dialup Tiscali Broadband (double screen icon). I was wondering if this could have started the problem other than that nothing was changed that could have caused the choking of bandwidth. Is there a defualt settings tab inside the network connections I could try?

The guy on the phone from India was very patient and tryed his best but actually succeeded in making the speed a third slower, dont ask how So I re-installed the modem again later on and got back to the original slow speed of around 10kbps

There is no spyware in the system and viruses have been ruled out.
Ive reinstalled the modem mucho times
    Checked all cable and connections
Drank several beers and still I have no idea

    Cheers R

1394 is your PC's firewire adapters - yes, you can network over firewire - and the LAN connection's probably a built-in network interface. Launching the firewire connection shouldn't have killed your Tiscali connection though. You could rule it out, though, by unbinding TCP/IP from the firewire adapters; go to Start, Network Connections, then right-click on each of the 1394 adapters and choose Properties. You'll see a list of the protocols and services associated with the adapter with tick boxes next to the enabled ones. Untick the one that says Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) and then OK it. Repeat for the other 1394 connection (you say you have 2). That'd stop any TCP/IP traffic going over the firewire connections. I'd reboot immediately after. This would mean that you couldn't network over your firewire connection, but most people don't.
Other than that, I'd assume your Tiscali ADSL modem is listed under the dialup connections, and is hooked up via USB? If so, just check that it's set as your default connection (righ-click on it, choose Set As Default Connection - if it already is, then it'll show Cancel as default connection, so leave it alone).

I was thinking of using a system restore point?

It seems to be fluctuating between 10 and 30kbps today.

Tiscali want me to test another pc or laptop with the connection, but I dont have one available to me.

If it did turn out to be my 3month old pc at fault what could be the cause of such a problem?

Given its Tiscali, its VERY likely you've been capped at ISP level.
