    ntoskrnl.exe corrupt, windows 2000

Hi, i have got a dell d600 laptop, but today when i was switching it on i get this error:
    Disk I/O error: Status = 00008002
Windows 2000 could not start because the following files is missing or corrupt:
    <windows 2000 root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
What shall i do? I am very unfamilar with dos and a step by step instruction would be helpful.

1st thing - hope that you have good backups

2nd thing - get the win 2k disk in there and run a repair - that should fix it.

You'll be able to use a PE disk to access the file system and back some data up.
    http://www.ubcd4win.com/

then go find a win 2k disk - you'll fine reinstalling / repairing an OS a lot easier if you have the disk

if its a dell , then the chances are that it'll have a dell branded recovery disc somewhere ?

if you use that , make sure you've taken data off the system first as IIRC they flatten the system completly.

The laptop came win xp preinstalled with a win xp disc, but due to network incompatiblity with the office windows 2000 had to be installed. The discs are with the admins

    One more question
Do notebook hard disks have same connectors as desktop. What i was thinking is if i connect it to a desktop pc:
    a) i can backup
    b) i can copy/paste staright away.

Thanks so much for ur help.

you'd need an adaptor to use a laptop HD in a desktop ( as mentioned in the other thread )

If you have ntoskrnl.exe on disc (or can download it and put it on cd/floppy), try booting into DOS/recovery console or what ever and you should be able to copy it over using CHDIR or CD to change directory to the cd/floppy, and than COPY ntoskrnl.exe <windows 2000 root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe.

Worked for me when I've had the same type of problem on xp.
